Default Chiefs hire Patriots' Pioli as new GM

Scott Pioli, now the former GM of the Patriots, will take the reigns in Kansas City.

Can he duplicate his success in KC? Will head coach Herm Edwards get his walking papers?

I wouldn't count on KC having the kind of success the Pats have had, but there is certainly some reason to be hopeful for KC fans. With the incredible things the Pats have done without many real stars on the team, maybe Pioli can bring some of that with him.

Since it now seems as if Herm Edwards is a goner, I'd like to see him latch on somewhere else. After all, he has a proven track record of taking a previous NFL team to the playoffs in a head-coaching capacity.

Edwards is done in KC. Ferentz is rumored to be the top choice.

I think he will land on his feet though. He may have to take a coordinator gig before getting another head coaching job though.

I doubt Pioli has the type of success he did in New England. Bill Belichick has a huge amount of input on what goes on with that team and how it is built.

I agree the Edwards is destined to be a coordinator because he's frankly been mediocre for the most part as a head coach.

Good point about Pioli and Belichick, doublee. The trendy thing to do is grab Patriots coordinators and executives and hope they will duplicate NE's success. However, as we've seen with Crennel and Weis, it's far from a sure-shot. So I have no idea how Pioli will do in KC.

Is Edwards any more "mediocre" than Dick Jauron, Eric Mangini or Wade Phillips, all of whom have gotten themselves recycled into the head-coaching pool?

I think Pioli will do fine in KC. His main job in NE was to evaluate and help identify quality talent it is just that Belichick is the guy who has significant input into who they eventually settle on. As long as Pioli gets a coach who has a similar feel for talent and knows what to do with it the Chiefs will be fine.

I happen to think Edwards is a pretty good coach He got screwed in Kansas City as he inherited a team that had already shown signs of declining when Vermeil retired. It has not helped that they have had to basically rebuild the offensive line during Edwards' tenure due to retirement. They have lost some significant talent there the last 3, 4 years that they have not been able to come close to replacing just yet. The Chiefs just have not drafted terribly well the last several years.

I actually think Edwards is a decent coach too. Pioli should do pretty well there... maybe KC can get some decent drafts. Been a while since they have contended (2003?)

Well if they don't something at QB - and all the mock drafts I've seen so far say they won't - it won't matter who is the new head coach in KC.

And since Larry Johnson apparently wants out of there - and who can blame him for that? - I've got the perfect team to ship him off to; and you get only one guess as to which team that team is!

I'd give one of the #1s they have this year for Larry Johnson.

It is a win-win for both teams in my mind. The Eagles get a proven stud back to allow them to do more things with Westbrook and the Chiefs who have holes everywhere get another #1 to help the rebuilding process.
