I definitly agree that athletes who are on scholarship have no room to gripe.

But what about athletes who don't receive a dime in scholarship money (i.e. walk-ons), but still have to go to class, study (hopefully) and then do their football stuff (film, practice, lifting) 3-4 hours a day? I'm not necessarily saying the answer is necessarily to pay them, but I definitly have sympathy for those kids if they're struggling to get through school and aren't really able to work.

Then they can just quit football...It is an extra curricular. By walking on they take on the responsibility of all that, if they can't handle it all then they can quit.

No, like someone said before, that is what makes college football so much better than the pros, they play to win and not for the money, also I agree with previous posts that a lot of the players get college paid for through scholarships so that is payment enough.

Exactly. Agree 100%. Welcome huskersrule. I take it you are a Nebraska fan. That is my second favorite school, my dad's family is from Elsie, Nebraska so we always rooted along with my dad when the Huskers would play.

Don't I qualify for a paycheck just based on that alone?

If you held out you wouldn't play, plain and simple.

Bottom line is the schools make to much money off its players. Compensate them somehow. Buy their books or something.

Is a scholarship no longer considered compensation?

I'll ask again, what about the non-scholarship atheletes?

It's not a perfect world and not everybody gets everything they want. Some people have to work harder than others, that is just a fact of life. If they are a walk on than they are of course attending school there without a scholarship so they or their parents must be able to afford it. If they do well enough they might get a scholarship the next year so at least they get an opportunity. IMO.

For me the answer is an adament YES.

Athletes should be paid: They should be given free room and board worth tens of thousands of dollars, tuition worth a couple $100,000 dollars, and most importantly an opportunity to get a great education in whatever field they like and then go out and get a great job and make a million dollars in their lifetime. Not to mention the chance to learn and improve their athletic abilities and showcase them regularly to pro scouts who if they think they are good enough will offer them millions to play pro ball.

What 18 yr old in their right mind could ask or expect more than that at a chance for a great life and which most people can only dream about.
