It's pretty simple really. If you are on first, and reach 3rd on a single, the count it as an extra base. If you score from first on a double, it counts as an extra base.

There isn't any room for interpretation or subjectivity,

It is simply fact. This year, Votto takes more "extra bases" than Pujols on the bases.

I like Joey's chances to beat out Pujols for MVP...

Here are Joey Votto's last 3 Septembers/Octobers
2007: .321/.360/.548
2008: .309/.400/.723
2009: .385/.492/.692
Career: .340/.425/.660
Best month of his career through 3 seasons (2007 was Sept only).

Albert Pujols is the only player in big league history to hit 400 home runs in his first 10 seasons. He is also the only player in history to hit that many in his first 11 seasons.

Only problem is he is actually 37 years old, so he doesn't have much longer.

Then the "facts" are wrong, or at least misleading. I'll give you that Votto is a much better baserunner than I thought, and possibly better than Pujols. But Brendan Ryan is not better than Pujols.

So either they have faulty data, or they made a mistake. Because Albert Pujols is on base literally twice as much as Brendan Ryan the majority of games, and always tries to take the extra base.

I have no idea about Brendan Ryan. Where are you seeing these numbers?

Pujols numbers through 10 years in September:

.343/.440/.613

Pujols isn't going anywhere but up from this point on.

Uh, no, he is actually only 30 and probably has at least six or seven more great years left in him.

The facts won't stop the haters. Why they think he's older than 30, I have no idea.

Maybe they want to believe it, since players like Votto will never match Pujols career numbers. If he wants to match Pujols numbers at age 30, he'll need a four year average of 79 HR, 233 RBI, 228 R and 348 hits per year.

I was joking, first of all...

Secondly, no one thinks Votto will match Pujols career numbers. All I care about is the present and the future, and I believe Votto has a terrific chance to match Pujols every year moving forward.

That is percentage based, which is why Ryan ranks higher than Pujols I imagine.

Baseball-reference.com has the actual number of extra bases taken.

Something to consider down the stretch...

Cards: 31 in 31
The Cardinals and Marlins will now play their rained out August 8 game on Sept 20 at Sun Life Stadium.
The only scheduled days off for the Cardinals in September were the 2nd and 20th.
The Cards were to play 17 straight days prior to the Sept. 20 off day. (Including 14 of 17 vs Reds/Padres/ Braves). Now, the Cardinals will play 31 games in 31 days from Sept 3 to the end of the regular season on October 3.....and play 44 games over the final 45 days of the season.

The Reds on the other hand, have 3 off days in September.

Honestly I don't think it matters who comes out of the Central this year. Neither team is going to make it out of the divisional round of the playoffs. The Reds have gotten fat off of playing in a crappy division and can't beat teams with a winning record while the Cards don't have a closer who can close the deal in close games.
