Lute Olson.

How did Boeheim make that list above?

How did Coach K make that list?

Duke's never been a really well coached team, but have drowned teams with talent top to bottom.

Calhoun. He made Connecticut basketball into something more than a regional power. Penn State would need someone who has taken a program from the dulldroms to the elite.

Penn State NEEDS Bob Huggins...and they might be able to get him if they went after him...

Coach K drowned teams with talent? Isn't that what teams do? What have the beloved Calhoun, Olsen, and Boeheim done, just taken players off the street?

Where are the Bluegrass coaches, Pitino and Tubby? I would have to say Rick Pitino. That's blasphemy coming from a UK fan, but he was amazing in Lexington. He could recruit like no one (he had eight NBA players on one team in the late-'90s), he played an exciting style of ball, and he took them to a near-dynasty level with almost three titles in a row from '96-'98. I miss those days.

I agree with Jeff, as well. The talent at Duke isn't why Coach K is successful, silly. The talent is there BECAUSE of Coach K. He IS DUKE, he made that program. So it's beyond ridiculous to discredit him on that regard. Recruiting is a big part of college hoops, and he has done well.

If you look at the players Duke has put into the NBA, none have really blew up take Elton Brand's start out of it. Coach K teaches the game and gels his players for one good unit.

That is the nature of having a successful college program in any sport over an extended period of time you immerse yourself with tons of talent so you never have to reload.

Although Coach Wooden has to be considered the "Red" Auerbach of college basketball (he led UCLA to four 30-0 seasons, 88 consecutive victories, 38 straight NCAA Tournament victories, 10 National Championships and 19 Pac-10 Championships), I wasn't born when Wooden had all of his success.

While Coach K might be the best choice from the above list outside of Wooden, I would have to say the best coach I have seen during my lifetime in college basketball has been Dean Smith. He is the all-time winningest coach with 879 victories, coaches Carolina to 11 Final Fours, 2 National Titles and 13 ACC Championships. The eight-time ACC Coach of the Year also won at least 20 games for 27 straight years and had an NCAA-record 22-straight seasons with at least 25 wins. In comparison, Coach Wooden had 11 consecutive seasons with at least 25 wins.

I really hope you're not serious. As just a fan, I would find that upsetting. How, as an alum, could you support a dirty, corrupted piece of scum like Bob Huggins at Penn State? He's the anti-Joe Paterno. Huggins didn't graduate his players and ran a corrupted program at Cincinnati. Even they ran him out of town after a while. I would rather see the program in the state it is now with someone like Ed DeChellis then see the university compromise its values for some wins.

Huggins wasn't bad at graduating his players for the types of players that he got there. He's given a lot of people an opportunity they wouldn't have otherwise gotten. Huggins and Tarkanien always get a bad rap. And, I certainly don't think that Huggins is a bad guy or on the opposite end of the spectrum of Joe Paterno. Sure, he's not up there with Paterno, but he's somewhere in the middle, not the complete end.

As for Coach K, I never said he wasn't a great recruiter. If you want to say I mis-answered the question, fine, but I tend to keep the two separate even if recruiting is a huge part of coaching. I still wouldn't take Coach K FIRST and since he included Wooden on his list, I assumed this was all-time and I don't think Coach K makes my list. I'm not discounting recruiting, but I think someone like Pitino has done recruiting as well and I think of Pitino as a better coach. Hell, for CURRENT coaches, my list is probably Pitino, Izzo and then Coach K. I'm not trying to completely knock the guy.

Though he's never won a national championship I'd consider Kelvin Sampson.

Pitino may be at the current top of the list. Imagine if he were back coaching at a powerhouse school instead of Louisville. Despite that, his teams are always playing well.
