Default John McEnroe vs Serena Williams... who wins?

This seems to be a hot topic these days, so I figured I'd ask the question.
Mac has challenged either of the girls to a match, but I guess they have both declined so far.

are they afraid?

so who do you think would win?

I think it's obvious McEnroe would beat either one of them badly.

First off, put tennis topics in the tennis board -- thanks.

As for the question, there is no doubt in my mind that the Williams sisters could both beat McEnroe -- easily, if they played today. First of all, they are in their early 20s and Mac is 40-something. He isn't near on the same level physically as they are. He has been a commentator, for gosh sakes! Secondly, they are 6-1 or so and very big for women and have huge power games. So in a way, they play like the men on the ATP so you can forget that argument.

ANy other player on the WTA tour I could confidently says MacEnroe has the edge. Talking about the Williams, I am just not so sure.

Marc, they may be big (actually only Serena is, Venus is pretty small) but they dont have the same power game as the men do, no way. If they could beat him, why wouldn't they agree to it?

Of coarse, we are used ot the John MacEnroe with the older wooden and aluminum racquets. Anyone seen him hit with the newer ones? He may have some pace we haven't seen.

yea, i wonder if John would play with his Jack Kramer wooden racket?

If Mac is training and playing like they say, than I think he would take either of the sisters. people don't realize the difference between men and womens power.
I still think it would be a good match, nevertheless.
If the Sisters can force a 3rd set, the McEnroes legs may get a little tired.
it's a bummer that the sisters won't agree to playing.

Nah, Mac would be at the net at every opportunity. Not much running. I have a feeling these older pros still spend a good deal of time on the court.

yea, don't forget Mac was one of the greates net players of all time. But the key would be if he could get up to the net quick enough with those old legs.
that would be the defining factor in my opinion.
Id take MAC 6-4, 7-5 !

I would really like to see this match take place. But I have a feeling it never will, and not because the Williams don't want it to. I bet they would love to give it a shot.

Hello everyone,

There is no chance any of the Williams sisters could beat McEnroe. McEnroe is not a Bobby Riggs who is overweight, out of shape, and a guy who has not stayed on the court more than an hour at one time since he quit competitive tennis.

He still plays senior tour, practices with guys on the tour at different stops and is in decent shape.

It would not even be a contest.

Williams sisters may look good against other girls because

(a) other players can't return their serves. Other players have never seen serves as powerful as the Willaims' serves...
Well I hate to break the news but McEnroe has seen plenty of serves like Williams' sisters and might just return too many balls back, thus not allowing the sisters to collect the many "free" points that they are used to doing so..
The real question is.... Have Williams sisters had to deal with a left-handed serve as accurate and filled with spin as McEnroe's? Please do not say Seles! Therefore...

(b) Williams sisters' returns look stunning because thanks to their athleticism they can return without much trouble the serves of Hingis, Seles, Davenport and Capriati who happen to be the top players.
But do you really think they would return this well against McEnroe? Or rather, would they even be able to return his serve consistently at all? I doubt it!

(c) Williams sisters' most obvious advantage over the other girls is their power which leads to their ability to hit winners from anywhere on the court. They look great and make us raise our eyebrows in doing so simply because the other women on the tour can not get to those balls. What is going to happen though when they have to play McEnroe who may anticipate those balls (his strength) and might even be faster at 40+ than some top women players like Seles, Clijsters, Hingis? Would the Williams sisters look that good when they are playing to "not be overwhelmed" then "to overwhelm"?

To make a long story short, just remember that against McEnroe or any current top 100 male player the Williams sisters would have no chance simply because we would not be able to see the dominating Serena or Venus against Mac that we would otherwise see so naturally against other WTA players..

Take care

He is correct. He knows more about the game and he has lots of experience. I would love to watch this match.

McEnroe still plays the game as we speak, He could handle playing the Williams sisters. I as well would love to see it.
