Question Should Pete Sampras call it quits?

After a which seemed to be a storybook ending for him, Winning The U.S Open against long-time friend and rival Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras says he still has the physical ability to play more, He also said he'd like to go to Wimbledon again also. Should Pete end his career winning the major against his long time rival, Or should he continue because he wants to?

The only person who really knows is Pete as far as how his body is doing. He has indicated he thinks he can play more, but I don't think he should go out on a low note and it would be hard to match what happened at the U.S. Open. On one hand, I want him to play on because he might still have a Wimbledon left in him, but on the other, I want him to go out on a high and not be embarrassed anymore!

He's the greatest male tennis player ever, he can never be embarrassed. He should do as he feels and what makes him happy. His legacy is what it is, even if he never wins again.

The best male tennins player ever.

Of course he can be embarrassed! Sure, it may not have an effect on my long-term or his status in the game when it's all said and done, but being dominated by some guy ranked #138 in the world is humiliating. I'm sure he'd even admit to that.

By the way, he cancelled all events for this year: http://espn.go.com/tennis/news/2002/1002/1440120.html Not meaning he'll retire since he's not missing much, but it has fueled retirement talks.

Well Marc, I guess its in the eye of the beholder then. One of the great thrills I had as a kid, was getting to see Willie Mays play in person. He was well past his prime, but still arguably the greatest player to ever play the game. It is something I will never forget. I got to see Willie play, that is what I remember, not that he was no longer great.

It is sports, it is an entertainment. Why should anyone stop doing it, if a team will still keep them around, or in Sampras case, he still meets the requirements to play professional tennis. You can never erase the accomplishments that one makes, by playing past there best days.

Even if Pete goes out an loses to some guy ranked #138 it does not take away anything he accomplished. It also provides, even for maybe only one person, the chance to see Pete play that never was able to before. But the bottom line is, its an entertainment field. If he is enjoying it, he should do it.

If he thinks he can take home another big "W", I say go for it! Only he knows what he can and what he can't do. By taking the rest of the year off, it will be good rest, but a good chance to get out of shape. He will have a tough time gettign started in 2003 if he decides to keep playing. (Now after I say that watch him win the AO)

You never know. If he serves well and volleys well for 7 matches he can pull it off.

It would be totally amazing! 15 slams! I think then he would put his racquet down for good and never look back. He does not want to leave The big "W" with a second round loss!

I hope Pete can pull it off because I don't wanna see him retire on a losing note. But either way he is probably the best ever tennis player of all time no question.
