Post The U.S Open

Can anyone give me the scoop when this tournament starts? Looking forward to see if any of the top seeds who were kicked out from Wimbledon can bounce back in this one. eg. Pete Sampras, this tournament could make or break his remaining career.

It starts in early September, if I'm correct -- in New York. Already, my favorite women's player in Hingis is out due to that foot injury, but she should be back for the Australian Open, I hope. I think this is Roddick's chance to win one -- Sampras just saw his best chance on grass pass him up.

I am still not yet convinced that Roddick can win a slam, although I was very impressed with his play in the last tourney.

I think if Heiwtt can continue to play well he has the best shot. But I am hoping Sampras can do it, hee hee.

I saw Hewitt play a little today on ESPN and he looked invincible.
he'll be tough to beat.
I'll be rooting for Sampras too.

although I have to admit that I am most looking forward to the McEnroe/Becker match!!

I'd love to see Henman win,
the guy looks like such a geek that you can't help but wonder how the hell he's out there.
it would be great to see him beat Hewitt.

I am not a fan of Henman at all, and I don't know why. I usually love serve and volley players. He just has no weapons.

This is what is wrong with tennis:

A match between two washed-up, has-beens will STILL out-draw the finals with its current players. Casual fans don't care about many of the game's top players and now that Agassi and Sampras are all but done, the game desperately needs Andy Roddick and others to step up for American tennis.

Awww, there is a lot more wrong with tennis than just that! I think all tennis needs the Davis Cup format and rules. Just about every other sport can coach their team/players!

I agree Marc,
back in the 80's, there was so mcuh personality within the players, good or bad. You had guys like McEnroe, Connors and Nastasie, who were so emotional about each and every shot, it was like each shot was a life or death situation, adn none of them were afraid to express their dissapointment/joy of each point, questionable call, etc.
that's what made them so great to watch.
who wants to watch 2 robots playing tennis, no matter how good they are , people also want to see charisma in athletes, and mens tennis is seriously lacking it these days.

Untill other personalities like McEnroe or Connors enter the arena,
people will still rather see these old men play.....

I would say Hewitt and Safin show their excitment and disappointment. Different ways I suppose. This Agassi/Hewitt match up tomorrow will be sweet.

And hey, you have Sampras questioning every other call now, heee.

good point crammy,
Yea, Hewitt and Safin have some fire in them.
All we need now is Roddick to get that 'McEnroe' attitude and confidence.

I think Coach Tom brought up a good point in his latest article (https://www.sports-central.org/sport...ticle141.shtml) in that Roddick and Hewitt have great power games but that's all they have -- no finesse or smarts as far as what it takes to win. They hit as hard as they can on every forehand, backhand, or serve even when it isn't needed.

He said that about Hewitt!!!???!!! Hewitt has very little fire power and a massive amount of finess. Look at the passing shots, the placement, the skill. His legs get him to every ball, but he doesn't hit any shot really hard. Harder than me yes, harder than most on the tour, no... He just never misses and keeps moving you around.

And Roddick has shown a huge amount of maturity this year. Yes he slams his forehand, but look, it works... He has the most wins this year on tour, so I say keep on bringing the big serve and forehand. This kid just gets better and better each month, he is playign very well. And I think has to be smart on the court to be getting the wins he is getting.

Hewitt is so smooth and consistent on the court he was never about the power game he just does what it takes to earn the points and runs across the court. No suprise really why he's #1 in the world.

Anyway with the U.S open starting on Monday let's make our picks! I'll start off with the mens draw and Im picking Sampras . I really am cause you just never know who's gonna win! Anyways, Im hoping for Pete to come threw at least one more slam, I think best 3 out of 5 sets works in favour for Pete. For the womens draw you gotta look at the Williams sisters, If one of them doesnt win the other one will. Id say Serena, and have Capriati as my wildcard.
