Exclamation Sampras not quitting, but won't play in Australian Open

Sampras not quitting, but won't play in Australian Open
Dec. 18, 2002
SportsLine.com wire reports

LOS ANGELES -- Pete Sampras plans to play in 2003, after skipping the Australian Open.

The 31-year-old Sampras had left open the possibility that he might quit tennis after winning his record 14th Grand Slam tournament title at the U.S. Open in September.

Now he's decided to stay on the tour -- for the time being.

"I'm just going to see how it goes, just kind of ride the wave and see how far it takes me," Sampras told the Los Angeles Times for a story published Tuesday.

His wife, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, gave birth to their first child last month.

Sampras said he doesn't have enough time to prepare for the year's first major tournament, which starts Jan. 13. He won the Australian Open in 1994 and 1997.

Sampras expects to return to action in February at the Siebel Open in San Jose and plans to compete in the year's last three majors -- the French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

He decided last week to extend his career after consulting with his wife, father Sam and brother Gus.

I wasn't bummed to see he is not playing. It is a slower surface court, and I believe he has only won the tournament twice before. (I could be wrong)

He needs time with his new addition to the family. Of coarse the longer he stays away the tougher it will be.

I kind of thought Sampras would not be playing the Australian Open, because of his new child. I, however, hope he continues to play for as long as he can. I get tired of people saying he should retire. Why should he retire, when he can still play. Wimbledon proved last year, that he could still win a slam. I hope he stays around for as long as he wants to.
