M's Ichiro, Cards' Pujols win rookie of year honors

NEW YORK - Seattle outfielder Ichiro Suzuki became the second straight Japanese player to win the American League Rookie of the Year award, and Albert Pujols of St. Louis was a unanimous choice Monday for the National League honor.

Suzuki received 27 of 28 first-place votes from a panel of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Pujols got all 32 first-place votes, becoming the ninth unanimous rookie pick in the NL. The others were Frank Robinson (1956), Orlando Cepeda (1958), Willie McCovey (1959), Vince Coleman (1985), Benito Santiago (1987), Mike Piazza (1993), Raul Mondesi (1994) and Scott Rolen (1997).
I very much support these decisions - both players were outstanding contributors and they both deserved it.

No big surprises here. Congratulations to both Ichiro and Pujols...they deserve it.

Yeah, they deserve it. Both of them did a great job this past season. But I guess that's why they get the ROTY awards.

I'm surprised a bit that Ichiro got all but one first place vote. I thought he'd lose a couple more due to his experience in the Japanese leagues. There's no reason why people shouldn't vote for him. IMO, if you're new to the MLB, you're a rookie to the league, no matter the experience you have in other leagues. You may not be a rookie to baseballl, but you're a rookie in the MLB.
