Default Dungy retires...

Tony Dungy has retired as head coach from the Indianapolis Colts.

Jim Caldwell, longtime Indy assistant, will take the reigns...

*****************************************************

Will the 53-year-old Dungy resurface? How will Caldwell do with a team that, despite making a great run in the final weeks, seems to be on the decline?

Caldwell's record as a HC in college is cause for concern, to say the least.

Between this and the possibility of Kerry Collins perhaps leaving Tennessee (the topic of another thread here), I'm feeling pretty good right now if I'm a Houston Texans fan.

With Dungy stepping down, this is the best move the Colts could have made: promote a longtime assistant who will try to keep things the way they are with Manning and the offense.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dungy returns. He changed his wording to a less-than-solid denial of returning from his initial "if I retire, it's for good" stance.

If Dungy does come back, it should be to the team Brett Favre is then playing for!

We all saw this coming. Especially after the Colts "choked" again. They really looked like they were going to make a run. Getting beat by 8-8 SD was no expected. I think this is a good time for Dungy to "take a break".

I think we'll see him again.

Dungy is likely a HOF coach, but really underachieved for the most part with the Colts the past 7 years.
4 times 1 and done in the playoffs
6 times loosing in the postseason when favored.
Colts were and still are loaded with talent.
Gotta wonder what Belichick could have done with those colts teams.

I agree.... I know he is a "lock" for the HOF.... but that had me scratchen my head a little. He only has 1 superbowl, and his teams were LOADED with talent and sure did choke quite a lot?

But hey.... from what I hear he is a really good guy - people have nothing but good things to say about him so if that carries weight then thats fine with me.

Well, they were loaded with offensive talent for sure. But how many great defensive players have they had during Dungy's tenure? They have had a couple of dominant pass rushers and a good DT or two and Bob Sanders at safety but I can't remember them ever having any LBs that really scared anyone or exceptionally good corners for that matter.

The Colts just never really had that dominating defense you typically need to make deep playoff runs year-after-year.

Dwight Freeney is the only name I can think of.

Dungy does not even have a .500 record in the playoffs...

But that "1" in the "Super Bowl Titles Won" column overshadows that, and all else.

Tony Dungy > Andy Reid

Not quite.... its the same for players.... lets face it, any loser can win one - but to win two or more defines you as a coach / player.

Go over on the Eagles Message Board and say that Andy Reid is a better coach than Tony Dungy.

You will discover very quickly how right Konrad Adenauer was when he observed that a thick skin is a gift from G-d.

No thanks.... I'm not going near any of you nuts!!!

You alone are enough Anthony

And back to the subject - I'm not saying Andy Reid is better than Dungy (sorry - my post was just in response to your "1 win" reply - not the Dungy > Reid thing)
