Actually, his father is the one who pushed him to go to the NBA. His father had always maintained that if his son was guaranteed a spot in the lottery he was going pro. Coming out of high school he was projected as being a borderline lottery pick so he came to UNC. He was actually leaning towards staying until his father convinced him he should put his name in the draft. Supposedly Williams told Tyler Hansbrough that he wished he had stayed in school and that was a big influence on Hansbrough staying put.

Granted you can't do much better than Williams did in the draft but his game would have matured so much more at UNC this year as the offense would have gone through him and he would have been the go-to-guy for the Heels.

Yea, too many of the kids coming out of high school worry about their first contracts rather than their second ones...

Well it's all about draft position and guranteed money.

Every kid thinks he is good enough to be a max player. And they have seen guys like a Mustafa Shakur who has gone from first round prospect to possibly undrafted.

Not saying that would happen to Marvin Williams, but they take the guranteed lottery spot rather than risk a year with inexperienced players.

I doubt it would have happened to Williams. The fact that he is 6' 9" with above average skill and athleticism almost guarantees you a first round pick in the NBA whereas guys like Mustafa Shakur are a dime a dozen in the NBA.

One year rentals are the way things are done in the NCAA now. Look at North Carolina in 2004 and Syracuse a few years ago with Carmelo Anthony. Since the best players typically don't stick around for their full 4 years, it's possible for a first year player to have championship impact.

And I've got two words to explain why OJ would want to go to USC - Matt Leinart. OJ's going to play wherever he goes, but I bet he took at the lifestyle Leinart enjoyed last season in southern CA and thought "That's the life for me since I have to wait for the NBA anyway."

Actually it was Carolina '05 and they are a bad example of one year rentals. Their starting five were all juniors and seniors not one year rentals. Marvin Williams was the only one of top seven players to bolt after just one year. May, Felton, and McCants were all three year starters and Jackie Manuel and Jawad Williams were both seniors with Marvin Williams and David Noel as the first two off the bench. That team was deep with 'veteran' college talent.

Truth be told Syracuse is really the only team in recent history that won a title where a freshman was the star player.

Florida was mostly Sophomores and Juniors who all came back for another year by the way.

UConn was led by Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon neither of which were freshmen.

Maryland, Duke, and Michigan State were all lead by upper classmen.

Just to clear a few things up, from what I understand, Bill Walker will not be eligible for the NBA Draft next summer, meaning he will have to go to college, or play overseas.

Expect him to end up at Kansas State to play with Huggins' brand new powerhouse.

I wouldn't think Mayo will be here though. I'm thinking the rumors will eventually be proven true and he'll end up at USC where he can help put that program back on the map and live it up in with a Hollywood lifestyle.

Has that officially been decided yet? I seem remember reading a couple of weeks back that he was thinking of challenging it in court on the basis that his class graduated this spring and that he will be 19 next spring.

I guess should have said that, at the moment, Walker is ineligible for the NBA Draft. If he's determined to go to the NBA next year, he'd have to go to court to challenge the ruling. He is out of eligibility because he played varsity basketball as a ninth grader, then switched schools after the season was over and went back to eighth grade.

So which graduating class do you stick him with?

He has just hired a laywer, presumably to fight the OSHAA ruling on his high school eligibilty. That laywer is Richard Katz, who also represents....Bob Huggins.

I am sure that won't draw the NCAA's attention...

Kevin Love did committ to UCLA the other day, and he said when he told UCLA Coach Ben Howland, Love thought he was going to cry.

I wrote that so that it can be misread, so this is the way it should be read.

When he called Coach Howland to tell him he was going to committ, Love said it sounded like Howland was about to cry.

Just to clear up any confusion.

Canadian Player of the Year, 6'7" SF D.J. Wright committed to LSU. Chose the Tigers over Syracuse, Pitt, and multiple other schools. Shoots 65% from 3, has a 34" verticle leap.
