Default Hard drive died (I think)

What started out as a normal Saturday morning ended a literal nightmare as I'm fairly sure my laptop's hard drive crashed on me. I won't be on the SCMB for the next couple days, at the minimum. If it is indeed my HD (I will find out for sure Tuesday), I will have to get it replaced and that will take 1-2 weeks. It's hard enough keeping SC's content side under control, so I wanted to let you all know why I won't be around. I'm typing this on my roommate's computer.

Backup your data if you ever don't want to lose anything. I have a week-old backup, but it's far from comprehensive. I will be more thorough from now on. It really, really sucks, the hundreds of hours I'm going to lose by starting completely over.

Do you have to send it away to Apple and is that why it is going to take 1-2 weeks? There's a PC shop right downstairs about 2 second walk from my apartment block; I can see it from my balcony. I bet they could let me know in a matter of days what's wrong and I could buy a new cheap hard drive right off the shelf in a matter of minutes if I indeed needed a new one.

Sorry for my rambling.

P.S.
This is more a knock against laptops rather than Macs.

Thanks for the compassion. It's going to take me a long, long time to get everything back to normal, and it's wreaking havoc on my life. Lee is right that one downside to laptops is you can't repair/upgrade them like desktops, but it's something I'm willing to live with. If it is my HD, I send it to Apple and they replace it for free. And I love my Powerbook and Mac, but it's not indestructable, and neither are PCs. Plenty of PC hard drives die, too.

Please, don't make this another Mac vs. PC debate. This comes at a time when I have major papers due, tests, research that needs to be done, please understand rather than ridicule.

My PC's harddrive crashed right after I went back to school in early September and lost it for a week. Good luck with getting it repaired.

First off- that totally sucks, Marc... I was in class tonight and spent 3 hours on a video project (forgetting to save occasionally) and Premiere crashed.. totally ruined my night.
Now of course multiply that by 100 and that might be close to what you're feeling!

Second, halfway thru reading the title post I'm thinking "oh boy, I bet Lee's gonna jump all over this one" LOL
