Thumbs down PC Gone Mad? Sean Avery Suspended

Unless I'm missing something - is the phrase "sloppy seconds" considered some sort of obscenity in Canada? - the NHL's cup has runneth over with political correctness, in the matter of Dallas Stars' winger Sean Avery, who has been suspended indefinitely by the league for his use of that remark:

This is the most ridiculous story I've encountered since the infamous Tex Antoine flap in 1971 - and now, as then (when I was 12 years old), I cannot help but ask myself:

Has the whole world gone hysterical?

You know I'm a bleeding heart bedwetter, and all PC up in here myself, so I clicked on the link, anticipating I could muster a defense of the situation.

But, I can't. What group is "sloppy seconds" offensive too? Women who have had sex...with ... at least ...two guys? I grant you, that's a pretty large group.

I don't get it either. When I heard he had been suspended for disparaging remarks I figured he dropped the c-word or called her a dirty whore or something. Sure the remarks were probably inappropriate but hardly worth suspending the guy indefinitely over.

(shrugs shoulders)

Private corporations can do whatever they want provided they don't violate CBA agreements.

Same deal as always.

Okay good, I'm not the only one who doesn't quite see what the big deal is with what he said.

Tex Antoine was a weather reporter for WABC-TV, Channel 7; in the 1960s he crafted a distinctive persona known as "Uncle Wethbee."

In the summer of 1971, the greater New York area was plagued by several consecutive days of unusually wet weather, prompting Antoine (who had discarded the "Uncle Wethbee" identity by then) to remark that the weather was "like rape - you can't do anything about it so you might as well enjoy it."

Well the feminists hit the roof - and they were at the very height of their shrillness during this time, particularly in and around New York (it was right around then that a group of them occupied the Statue of Liberty and had to be forcibly removed - an incident that received a spectacular amount of publicity). They demanded that Antoine be fired, and WABC swiftly caved in. About six years later, Antoine was found dead in his Manhattan apartment (never having secured steady employment since the firing), of an apparent overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol whose magnitude made it highly problematical for the medical examiner's office to determine whether it was suicide or an accident.

And since you're no longer "away," Kevin, why not take a shot at the NFL pick'em contests, especially the Pointspread Contest, which Brad, Doug and Nate have all won first time out after lengthy absences - and hey, if I have to finish last again this week, it might as well be last of 8 or 9 instead of 5 or 6!

+1 This seems like an overreaction to me, too. But it might be a punitive punishment since what I've heard is Avery is hated around the league, having alienated previous teams and teammates.

Its not like he shot himself in the leg, or got caught doing cocaine in his car, or quit playing for a few years to go smoke weed then came back. Geez.

It's a publicity stunt on both ends and it worked.

11 posts for hockey.

We all fell for it.

Now the Stars have decided Avery will not be back with the team:

I think this was the final straw. He has been in trouble in the past. But that being said I thin he will end up somewhere. Teams always need a enforcer/pest.

Someone who loses guys to injury and thinks he can make a difference in terms of their postseason success will take a chance on him. For an enforcer he does have some actual skill.
