Default Australian Open 2011

Na major happenings the first two days, except the double bagel of Dinara Safina by Kim Clijsters. It set some sort of a record about an ex-number one player getting double bageled in the first round of a Slam (one where she has reached the finals a year ago).

Everyone knows that Safina is in a free-fall with her tennis, and she will probably end up outside the top 100 pretty soon, but seriously.. This was a rough match for her to take. Kim Clijsters was almost apologetic in her post-match press conference.

Ah Mertov, you crazy bastard. I've missed you more than anyone.

Member since June 2002, 301 posts. That, my friends, is quiet dedication.

It's just a shame no one else here likes tennis!

Not true, ghost, I like tennis, just don't get a chance to watch it enough. The Aussie Open is on late it seems and is the least significant Grand Slam.

GhostofSC & Tarkus...
You guys are my heroes if nothing but because of your cool nicknames

No worries, there are some who like tennis. They stop by and simply choose not to write I guess. Doesn't matter. I don't mind talking about it anyway.

Tough match for Federer yesterday. But he is through. I am curious to see if anyone will stop either Federer or Nadal from meeting in the finals of another Slam.

Venus pulls out with an injury, Henin is out, losing to Kuznetsova (not a huge surprise, Kuz can beat anyone on a given day)..

On the men's side, nothing particular so far. Federer destroyed Malisse, and Roddick came back to win in four sets against Robin Haase, but it was completely uncalled for, what he did in the second set, trying as hard as he could to nail Haase on the head with a forehand at close range.. That's Roddick though, nothing new..

Schiavone outlasts Kuznetsova 16/14 in the third. Probably the most exciting match of the tournament so far. It lasted 4 hours and 44 minutes, even the set that went 6/1 went 53 minutes. But I don't think Schiavone can win the tournament whereas Kuznetsova would have had a chance. Petkovic defeated Sharapova. This could finally be the breakthrough tournament for Na Li.

Wawrinka just beat Roddick in three straight sets. This could be the year where Roddick leaves the top 10 for good. Tsonga goes up 2 sets to 1 then unexplicably throws away the last two sets 6/1 6/1.. He is the strangest dude on the tour when it comes to up and downs, despite being talented enough to beat any player on the tour on a given day.

Quarterfinals on the men's bottom side are: Federer vs. Wawrinka & Djokovic vs.Berdych
Women'stop side: Wozniacki vs. Schiavone & Na Li vs. Andrea Petkovic

Quarterfinals line-up:

Wozniacki-Schiavone
Petkovic-Na Li
Radwanska-Clijsters
Kvitova-Zvonareva

Nadal-Ferrer
Murray-Dolgopolov
Berdych-Djokovic
Federer-Wawrinka

Only 1 (one) player out of all is a non-European! Should we be surprised?

My bad for not checking the forums lately, else I could've contributed. I haven't really been able to catch much of the action since Sunday so I can't really offer anything new.

As for it being Na Li's breakthrough tournament. I hope it is.

Will it be Murray's? I reckon it will be a Federer-Murray final now and I think Federer will just about get the better of him again.

There was a chance for not one but two "histories" being made this weekend..

Neither happened. Djokovic beat Murray and Fred Perry still remained the last Brit to win a Slam since mid-1930s. Na Li could have been the first Asian player to win a Slam until Clijsters felt otherwise.

Congrats to Djokovic for two impeccable matches in a row, and to Clijsters for yet another Slam title.
