Cool NFL Pointspread Contest: Playoffs

I am pleased to announce that the NFL Postseason Pointspread Contest has been reinstated after a one-year absence!

Here are the opening lines for the wild card games (home teams in CAPS):

Saturday, January 6:

INDIANAPOLIS 6 1/2 over Kansas City (4:30 PM ET)
SEATTLE 2 1/2 over Dallas (8:00 PM ET)

Sunday, January 7:

NEW ENGLAND 9 over N.Y. Jets (1:00 PM ET)
PHILADELPHIA 5 1/2 over N.Y. Giants (4:30 PM ET)

For further information, including complete contest rules, click here.

And congratulations to Jeff Boswell are in order for blowing the competition in the regular-season Pointspread Contest out of the proverbial water, with five weekly first-place finishes when runner-up #99 had three and no one else had more than two.

Now let's see if Jeff can extend his magic touch into the postseason, or if he is the Peyton Manning of SCMB!

Cool Anthony's Wild Card Playoff Picks

7

Final regular season record: 125-122-9, Pct. .506. Best Bets: 21-26-4, Pct. .451.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SATURDAY

INDIANAPOLIS 45, Kansas City 17 (+6 1/2) - All you'll hear this week is how Larry Johnson is going to do this and that against the last-in-the-league Indianapolis run defense. But did that defense stop the Colts from going 12-4 during the regular season, including 8-0 at home? Plus the Chiefs have had their problems on rugs of late - 1-5 both ways in their last six - and are winless and coverless lifetime at the RCA Dome. In addition, the Colts also get the Chiefs at home here after the four most recent meetings in the series have been at Kansas City (with Indianapolis winning three, including one playoff game). Finally, in the Peyton Manning era, the home team has won and covered in all four wild-card games the Colts have played in, and done so by a combined 103 points. Wild card weekend begins with a blowout.

Dallas 41 (+2 1/2), SEATTLE 28 - The Seahawks didn't want to go into the playoffs with a four-game losing streak, but they paid a heavy price in evading that fate: Three members of their secondary - Kelly Herndon, Jimmy Williams and Marcus Trufant - all sustained injuries in the 23-7 win at Tampa Bay, and T.O. and T.G. (Terry Glenn) are coming to town no less. And remember that no Super Bowl runner-up has won so much as a single playoff game the following season in nearly a decade, and you have to go all the way back to 1977 to locate the most recent insance of an NFC Super Bowl loser having done that! Can't see Tony Romo and his receivers doing anything but going utterly wild in this one.

SUNDAY

NEW ENGLAND 20, N.Y. Jets 14 (+9) - The Patriots look like they're getting everything together at precisely the right time, but the Jets aren't exactly staggering into the postseason either, and were 6-2 on the road this season, after having gone winless away from Club Med in 2005. There shouldn't be a great deal of scoring in this affair - particularly with rain in the long-range forecast for the Northeast this weekend - so we'll grab the near double-digit number.

PHILADELPHIA 24, N.Y. Giants 16 (+5 1/2) - While the Eagles can't seem to be able to stop most teams on the ground, they more than held their own against the strong and multi-facteted Giant running attack in both meetings this year; and while the lack of size in the Philadelphia secondary hasn't been much of an issue overall, the Giants have had no trouble taking maximum advantage of it. But this isn't the same Giants team that came into Lincoln Financial Field and erased a 17-point deficit to win in overtime in Week 2; included among the missing this time around are Amani Toomer - who had a career outing that day - along with left tackle Luke Petitgout, who protects Eli Manning's all-important blind side, and on defense, Michael Strahan and LaVar Arrington. And speaking of Eli Manning, isn't it hard to get last year's 23-0 playoff dud at home out of your head? Eagles fly on.

BEST BET: INDIANAPOLIS
