Default Love of the Woods

grew up playing in the woods. I spent most of my day as a child playing in the woods.

Playing army with my friends or swimming in the creek.

I just love the woods. I love to discover new places and I enjoy all the trees and brush.

I'm not much of a hunter, but I just love walking for miles in the woods and seeing where the trails lead.

Sometimes even as an adult I will go in the woods and just lay on the ground for hours just relaxing. Just one thing. Be aware of your surroundings-especailly don't let a snake sneak up on you.

As much time as I've spent in the woods over the yearsI haven't seen that many snakes. A few mocassins and Rat snakes maybe.

I have never really been in "the woods," per se.

Where I grew up, we had plenty of field-land behind our backyard that was owned by the city. Some of my favorite childhood memories were playing a neighborhood football game in that field, or swimming in the field, as it would easily flood following a hard rain.

Just off the field, there is a long-stretch of trees where a couple of neighborhood friends and I built a tree-house and where I discovered my neighbor's stash of Playboy magazines (talk about a life-changing moment).

When I was in high-school, the city decided to build up that land and actually placed two new, manufactured homes there.

I grew up spending a lot of time in Yosemite National Park. My uncle was a park ranger there during the summer and I learned a lot about survival in the woods. I got to the point where I could tell where I was using only a compass and watching the stars. It was an amazing experience -- one I am very happy I had. It was fun leading the tourists on the "nature-hikes" explaining what the various plants and animals were to them.
When I retire, I am going to build a house on a mountain and spend most of my time either hiking or watching baseball on TV.

Beyond cutting them down for firewood, I have no love whatsover for the woods themselves; but what is in them I love a great deal... squirrels, fox, turkey, partridge, bear, and deer! Hunting these animals means a great deal to me and to all sportsmen.

Just a hint here; if you like laying down in the woods bama; be sure to check for deer fleas first... trust me on that one...

I use to hunt squirrels. I went deer hunting one time and froze to death.

I'm not much for eating wild game except Turkey.

At one time in my life, I would have enjoyed that as well. Now, however, I couldn't pass the physical.

I have wonderful memories of being in the woods during boy scouts. We had a few campgrounds just outside of town with wooded ravines and creeks where you could hike. We tried to hunt squirrels and other animals, but only with makeshift weapons. Usually a rock or a stick, which makes hunting pretty tough. But, fun times, especially at night. One time, a scout master who was also in the national guard brought his night vision goggles and let us all wear them around in the woods. I remember thinking that was pretty much the coolest thing ever.

I grew up in the suburbs ... never lived anywhere remotely rural. I'm a city guy, really. But I absolutely love a weekend in the mountains or beach. In fact, I am driving out to Asheville and doing a car event with fellow enthusiasts next month ... it's in the Smokies and just beautiful and scenic.

I was in the Boy Scouts too. I loved camping in the woods and cooking breaksfast in the morning. It tasted so good.

I have never been to Yellowstone, but I always enjoyed watching those Hanna-Barbera characters Yogi Bear and Boo Boo trample through Jellystone National Park attempting to steal picanick baskets from all of the park's campers, all the while trying to avoid Park Ranger Smith.

Ah. Good-times!

What are those deep woods called over by Germany or near there-that are real thick and mysterious. The name escapes me right now.
