Default How 'bout those Boilers?

Purdue 26, No. 7 Ohio St 18 (Recap)

Now, I know Ohio State is hardly close to the best team in the country, but I can't help get excited about the Purdue Boilermakers taking down the No. 7 team this afternoon!

With the way Purdue's season has been going this year, losing 5 winnable games in a row, a win like this was amazing.

Nate, do you remember a defensive tackle who played for Purdue a while back by the name of Matt Mitrione?

Just like USC is prone to losing to an inferior Pac-10 opponent every year, OSU seems to slip-up every year, too. Purdue sure picked a tough team to snap a five-game losing streak. OSU beat themselves with 5 turnovers...

Terrelle Pryor blew the game with four turnovers of his own.

Hey, I don't care if Pryor did give us the game, Purdue got the W.

So how long till Tressel is on the hot seat? The perception is his teams are very good, but not title contenders anymore, and OSU fans won't accept that. Is the Big 10 just not recruiting enough speed and talent like the Pac-10 and SEC to ever be contenders?

It depends on whether he beats Michigan or not. That game means everything to those fan bases. Beat Michigan and all will be okay in Columbus for the time being. Lose to Michigan and the seat will definitely be hot under Tressel. He is 7-1 against UM and has beaten them five straight times. He owns Michigan and that is likely the primary reason why the fan base has yet to run him out of Columbus just yet.

Beating your rivals in college football and basketball goes a long way in terms of job security. Herb Sendek was basically run out of NC State because he never beat UNC or Duke and always to treat those games as just another game. It did not matter that he only ever had one losing season won 20 or more games four of his last five seasons there and made the NCAA Tournament five consecutive years. The program was in the best shape it had been in since the Valvano years but State fans were not satisfied with what he had done because he couldn't beat Duke and Carolina.

I think the big problem the Big 10 schools face is the talent pool is not quite as deep in their recruiting bases as it is for schools in the SEC and Pac-10. It is tough to convince kids to leave California and Florida where it is sunny and warm year round to come play in Big 10 country where it tends to get a bit bleak and dreary come the end of October and into November.
