Default Bloody Sock Hoax?

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slu...v=st&type=lgns
Quote:
BALTIMORE (TICKER) -- Did pitcher Curt Schilling paint his bloody sock red? That's what Baltimore Orioles broadcaster Gary Thorne claims he heard.
Thorne, who does play-by-play for Orioles' games on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, brought up the 2004 saga of Schilling's famous bloody sock during Wednesday night's game between the Orioles and Boston Red Sox.
While the Orioles were batting in the fifth inning, Thorne claimed that he had been told by Red Sox catcher Doug Mirabelli that Schilling had red paint and not blood on his sock during Game Six of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees.
This is crazy... I was watching the Redsox game yesterday and I picked up the MASN feed (MLB ticket) because they are in Baltimore and I heard Thorne say this. I immediatly asked myself "What the hell is he talking about? How come I've never heard this?" But they said no more about it - so I searched the around for a story. Now I see the story came out today... weird huh?

Well I would have to say that Thorne is clearly the douchebag here... he took back his statement
Quote:
Mirabelli said he spoke with Thorne in the Boston clubhouse about six months after the 2004 playoffs.

"As he was walking away he asked, 'How about the bloody sock?' I said, 'Yeah, we got a lot of publicity out of that,' and that was all he can recall me saying," Mirabelli said. "He said he assumed what I meant was that the sock was fake and that it was just a publicity stunt. That by no means is what I meant. There was never a doubt in mind there was blood on the sock."
Seriously, how do you take that quote and turn it into "Doug Mirabelli said the blood was really paint for PR" (or whatever).

Jim Rome spent an hour and a half on this topic today and wondered why. He came up with 3 scenarios:
1. Schilling painted his sock.
2. Mirabelli was joking and said it.
3. Thorne made the whole thing up.
Not sure which I believe more of the last 2. I definitely believe it was blood on the sock. What Schilling had done so he could pitch was amazing.

I want to see that sock in Cooperstown. Round the Horn - Tony R had a funny comment about "CSI Cooperstown"... that guy cracks me up.

Oh well... hopefully this will be the end of it and we can move on! ha ha

It must have been real, Schilling is offering $1m to anyone who can prove it was not: http://sports.myway.com/news/04272007/v7129.html

Actually he's offering $1m to that person's favorite charity and if he wins you have to pay $1m to his charity (ALS)

I doubt if he'll get many takers on that wager.
As I said, I don't think he faked anything. It was a post-season game and he'd been put together with duct tape and bailing wire to go out and pitch. It was a very heroic performance.
