First-Time Pickers

Welcome to year two of our pick'em game. Everyone is welcome to give their picks. Simply select the team from the 10 featured games above whom you think will win and list them in your post. For the Monday night game (the tiebreaker) you must post the total combined score of the game in addition to the winning team.

Final Notes

The deadline for posting your picks is before the kickoff of the earliest game listed. You may not post picks after any game in the pick'em has started as your selections will be disregarded. Furthermore, do not complain about the games selected - there is nothing scientific or exact about it. The goal is to pick the 10 best, most competitive games, period. With that said, good luck!

Cool Anthony's Week 14 Picks

Last week: 9-7. Season totals: 86-101-5, Pct. .461. Best Bets: 17-21-1, Pct. .449.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. GIANTS 17, Washington 10 (+3) - Have no fear - December's here! Jim Fassel is 19-5 straight up in December, giving the Giants the league's best record in this month during the period of Fassel's tenure (since 1997), including running the table in 1998 after entering December of that month 4-8 (and the Giants had also made the playoffs the year before). And while it may be true that even a repeat of that bit of history won't be sufficient to save Fassel's job, Steve Spurrier's job is rumored to be less than secure as well - and a big reason for that is his 1-8 record within the NFC East. One final note: The Giants won the first meeting at FedEx Field, and I'm sure you all know by now what that means.

N.Y. Jets 20 (+3*), BUFFALO 14 - It's the old Bickering Bills again, only this time around they don't have Marv Levy and his cohesive veteran core that always circled the wagons so well; plus they may have to go here without Drew Bledsoe, who was chased from last week's win at Club Med over that building's other occupants by a dirty blow to the head and is questionable.

PHILADELPHIA 27, Dallas 13 (+5) - The Cowboys are one of several teams this year who seem to have peaked too early - and their descent from that peak figures to continue on the natural grass (upon which Dallas has seven straight losses, including shut out in both '03 attempts, and is 0-5-2 against the spread) and in the cold weather (2-13 straight up and 4-10-1 against the line since 1995). Today's the day the Eagles make history, to paraphrase the early-'80s Styx lyric, for this victory clinches a playoff spot, making them the first team ever to reach the postseason after starting out 0-2 with both of the losses coming at home in a non-strike year.

PITTSBURGH 23, Oakland 14 (+4 1/2) - Last Sunday's post-game tirade by Bill Callahan did accomplish one thing: It makes the choice for the "official" theme song of the 2003 Raiders a very easy one - Funkytown; after all, that was the lead song from the Dumb And Dumber soundtrack, was it not? Warm-weather and dome teams went 6-15 against the spread at northern outdoor sites in the first four weeks of this year's cold-weather season, and this trend can only get hotter (or should I say colder?) in the last four weeks.

JACKSONVILLE 16, Houston 3 (+6*) - The 33 points allowed by the Jaguars the last three weeks is the fewest given up by any NFL team over that span; plus they may get to face a third-string, rookie quarterback (Dave Ragone) here with David Carr having re-injured his shoulder against Atlanta after Tony Banks sustained a season-ending broken hand; and until the Texans actually follow up one victory with another it is impossible to endorse them in that situation.

DETROIT 19, San Diego 12 (+3) - Like more of what I'm seeing from the Lions of late and San Diego has won exactly two road games in November and December over the past seven years. Steve Mariucci can match Marty Mornhinweg's victory total from both of his two seasons combined with a victory, and should do it.

BALTIMORE 44, Cincinnati 23 (+3) - Could the Ravens actually score 44 points three weeks in a row? Quite possibly; they rang up 38 last year at home against the Bengals, who have dropped six straight both ways at Baltimore. Jamal Lewis is going to have a huge day and the Ravens will take over the AFC North lead with a decisive win.

TENNESSEE 27, Indianapolis 14 (+3 1/2) - And if Peyton Manning wants to get off his postseason schneid, he'll have to do it on the road after the Titans run their home winning streak to twelve games and take control in the AFC South.

GREEN BAY 21, Chicago 17 (+7) - If it seems like a long time since the Bears last didn't cover, maybe that's because it has been a long time - you need to go all the way back to Week 6 to find the last time it happened; and they've actually done a lot better against the Packers at Lambeau than at home in recent years, going 4-1-1 versus the points since 1997 (compared with 2-5 in Chicago or Champaign) on what so far this season has been the less-than-frozen tundra - and long-range projections suggest that it won't be under 35 degrees at kickoff in Green Bay this Sunday.

MINNESOTA 31, Seattle 24 (+1) - Only a sloppy, lucky win over Detroit at home two weeks ago stands between the Vikings and what would otherwise be a six-game losing streak (and they are winless against the spread in their last six as the Detroit game was a push), but then again the Seahawks have their own little apprentice Detroit thing going on the road so you must reluctantly side with Minnesota at this price.

NEW ORLEANS 23, Tampa Bay 17 (P) - Another case of a team losing the first meeting at home within their division and now having to play the same team on the road; plus the Saints appear to have Tampa Bay's number and are one of only two teams (Kansas City is the other) who have yet to lose to an under-.500 team this season. This should all but finish off the defending Super Bowl champs so far as the playoffs are concerned.

NEW ENGLAND 31, Miami 10 (+3 1/2) - And the Patriots have both the hot angle going for them (they beat the Dolphins in October at the Pigeon-Toed Orange Bowl) and the cold one as well: It's in the late time slot, and Miami is 4-17 both straight up and against the line since 1995 as a visitor in cold weather. New England wraps up the AFC East title in the absolute best bet of the week; no other game even comes close.

DENVER 34, Kansas City 20 (P) - All Denver's offensive line has to do is block Vonnie Holliday, since no one else on KC's defense frightens anybody. Shanahan won't let the Chiefs clinch the AFC West crown in his house.

SAN FRANCISCO 35, Arizona 14 (+9 1/2) - What NFL team has gone the longest without finishing last in their division? If you said the 49ers, you're right; their last ride in the caboose took place in 1979. They can virtually, though not quite mathematically, guarantee keeping that streak current with a win here - and don't worry about the seemingly inflated number: Arizona has lost eleven in a row on the road by an aggregate 250 points (all but one of them by double-digit margins) and has a seven-game, 25-year-long drought in the town where Tony Bennett left his heart.

ATLANTA 21 (+2 1/2), Carolina 20 - Ever hear a game get characterized as a certain (usually bad) team's Super Bowl? Well, this is Atlanta's Super Bowl: Michael Vick's first start of 2003, at home, on prime time, facing a burned-out opponent that has lost five in a row and seven out of eight lifetime in the city General Sherman burned out nearly 140 years ago.

MONDAY NIGHT

St. Louis 16, CLEVELAND 13 (+5) - Cleveland is one of the year's major disappointments, but you simply can't trust the Rams outdoors and on grass - and especially not in a night game in cold weather, where St. Louis has neglected to cover on five consecutive occasions.

BEST BETS: BALTIMORE, NEW ENGLAND, DENVER

*N.Y. Jets at Buffalo is in a circle because Bills quarterback Drew Bledsoe is questionable and Houston at Jacksonville is in a circle because Texans quarterback David Carr is questionable.
