Default Andre Agassi's shocking revelations

SPORTSbyBROOKS Yes, Agassi Tanked: ‘Losing on purpose isn’t easy’

He admits to wearing a wig, tanking matches, doing drugs ... nothing too shocking considering how up and down his career was, but shocking that he admits it in the open.

Quote:
Losing on purpose isn’t easy. You have to lose in such a way that the crowd can’t tell, and in a way that you can’t tell. Your mind is tanking, but your body is fighting on. … You don’t do those tiny things you need to do. You don’t run the extra few feet, you don’t lunge. You’re slow to come out of stops. You hesitate to bend or dig.”

Of losing in the semifinals of the 1996 Australian Open against Michael Chang — a match Agassi suggests he tanked — he writes, “I’m glad I lost.”
Do all these revelations change your opinion of Agassi the tennis legend?

Hi Marc,

For me, they do not. Where this resonates wrongly in most people's minds is this erroneous belief that crystal meth enhances your performance. It does not. It actually hurts it, as Agassi's performance showed it during the time that he was using it.

You can read my article on this subject:

Sports Central / Sports Articles and Columns / Tennis / Andre Agassi is Still a Legend

I would also recommend Tom's review of the book. If Agassi's book is one of the best tennis books that I have read, Tom's review is also one of the best reviews that I have seen.

I agree, Mert. None of this tarnished Agassi to me. I knew he was a complex guy who faced a lot of ups and downs and if anything, his struggles make his overcoming them even more impressive. Now he is a legend of the game, retired with a great family.
