Default 11-foot baskets?

Heightened basket deters dunks in exhibition game

June 16, 2007
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

SEATTLE -- Brayden Billbe caught the pass on the block. He drop-stepped and turned to dunk, just as he usually would.

Nope, not this time. Not with the basket a foot higher.

"All of a sudden, I'm like, 'Oh, no.' So I flip it up there and it rolls off the rim," Billbe said. "I felt like an idiot."

There were a few of those moments on Saturday during an exhibition basketball game featuring 11-foot rims. Organized by former NBA assistant Tom Newell -- son of former coach and acclaimed big-man instructor Pete Newell -- the exhibition surely won't be remembered for the quality of play, but perhaps for sparking a change.

"I think this will open the professional league's eyes, where they may experiment with it, give it a serious look," said Jim Harrick, the former UCLA coach who was coaching one of the teams.

Maybe an 11-foot rim would force players to develop skills and fundamentals and not worrying about who has the best dunk, eh?

If you want to deter dunking and make the sport of basketball a little more challenging to its athletes, why stop at 11-feet? Why not go up to 15-feet, where dunking would be altogether impossible?

I think the 10-foot goal needs to stay.

And if people are really concerned with wanting to improve a younger player's game, why don't we start by moving the college three-point line back another three-feet?

Nothing NEW needs to be added to anything in sports...for the most part. If your glory years were in the past...and they were for every sport...that tells you changing in the first place got your ass in trouble.

If they want to deter it, then just make it against the rules. Why move the basket requiring all 300 trillion hoops in the world to be altered? This is so dumb. If they hate the dunk, remove it from the game and watch your arena go empty...

The next time I talk to my father, I've gotta tell him about this - he started advocating raising the basket like 40 years ago!

But I think he wants it raised to 12 feet, not 11; I'll have to get a clarification on that though.

Bring back the old coaches who kept their players at practice till they learned the fundamentals...

Kareem still says the outlaw of the dunk in college really helped his game...most notably developing the hook.

Still...there's no reason to raise the rim.

I'm content on watching "stars" shoot 41% on 10-foot rims thank you very much.

Notice that the NBA isn't considering this.

I guess they don't want to see all 30 teams file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Can you blame them?

They actually did consider it several years ago when the game was moving towards being all about who could dunk on who. Stern did an interview on Mike & Mike back when Red died and he brought up a conversation he had with Auerbach about it and Auerbach's response was basically one of what difference will it make the tallest players are still going to get all of the rebounds anyways.

In the short term it probably has an effect on the game but in the long run players will adapt and we will basically be back to where we were before. Besides, my guess is that a majority of the guys could probably dunk on an 11-foot basket anyway.
