Default Bobby Bowden will return as head coach

Source: Bowden agrees to one-year contract extension

Florida State and coach Bobby Bowden have agreed to a one-year contract extension worth just under $2.5 million for the 2007-08 season, a source familiar with the deal said Friday afternoon.

Bowden's contract had been set to expire in January. He made about $1.7 million this year.

Bowden's deal also includes the potential for bonuses meant to reward him for success next year and also for career achievements.

It has been stated by Florida State president T.K. Wetherell that Bowden can coach at the school for as long as he desires.

The old man will return for 2008. Interesting that the contract was only for 1 more year.

Whatever.

They keep losing and buck keeps smiling.

Bad news for FSU fans I guess. They probably only gave him a year since they are afraid he may keel over and die on the sidelines.

Have you heard anything about Chuck D (the one on his staff...not the rapper ) takin' over for the old man when he's done? I thought maybe that's why he came back to FSU after NC State told him to hit the road.

IMO when Bobby leaves the job will go to Jimbo Fisher. I think that is why he came to FSU. Bobby will have a say in who takes over.

Jimbo may be in line for the LSU job if Miles leaves now that Polini jumped the gun.

I don't know. I cannot imagine why FSU would even consider him after his disastrous run in Raleigh. Amato is a great recruiter but one of the biggest reasons he failed was he could not hang onto his assistants. Now granted top notch assistants are hard to hold on to but he had guys making lateral moves or taking similar jobs at lesser programs just to get out of there. The only thing that kept him here so long was his ability to bring in the most talent the program has seen in a long time. Amato was churning out first day draft picks like he was getting a bonus for doing so but his teams lacked so much in discipline and football IQ which is a sign of bad overall coaching.

The popular theory in these parts is that it will Terry Bowden's job if he wants it seeing as he is an official 'advisor' to the program in Tallahassee and he has been making noise of late about getting back into coaching in some capacity in the very near future.

I kind of wonder about what folks think about Fisher as head coaching material. He openly campaigned to get interviews at Alabama and NC State last spring and those two schools were not even remotely interested in him and LSU did not seem terribly broken up about him going to FSU. If he does not get the offense turned around then I don't know FSU fans are going to be terribly excited about the prospects of him running the program.

Sources: Fisher to replace Bowden at FSU when he retires

FSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher will succeed Bobby Bowden when he retires, the school will announce at a Monday news conference, sources close to the situation said Wednesday.

Whenever Jimbo Fisher replaces Bobby Bowden as Florida State's head coach, he'll be stepping in for one of the all-time greats.

The school will announce that Fisher has agreed to a three-year deal that will pay just under $1 million per year. When Bowden retires, the school has told Fisher he will succeed the legendary coach.

If for any reason Fisher is not named coach at that time, the school would pay Fisher a multimillion dollar buyout.

Fisher had been contacted by Southern Mississipppi and Arkansas, among other schools, gauging his interest to become their head coach.

No exact date has been given for Bowden's eventual retirement.

Perhaps the worst kept secret in college football this year.
