Default SCMB NFL Pick'em Contest: Wild Card Playoffs

Welcome to the
Pick 'Em Playoffs 2003

With the regular season over, it's now playoff time! You can check the final regular season standings here: http://www.nspencer.com/PickEm2002.html

Attached is the tournament bracket. Congrats to the players who made it into our little tourney! Hopefully I won't mess this up this year.

Here's how it's going to work. For the Wild Card round, everyone will chose who they think will win the game and a combined score for EACH game that will be used as successive tie-breakers. ANYONE is welcome to make selections, but only people in the tourney are allowed to win the championship. But it could be fun to say you did better than the champion.

The Matchups this week are:

Saturday, Jan. 4
Colts at Jets, 4:30 pm
Falcons at Packers, 8:00 pm

Sunday, Jan. 5
Browns at Steelers, 1:00 pm
Giants at 49ers, 4:30 pm

Tie-breaker order: Browns at Steelers, Colts at Jets, Falcons at Packers, Giants at 49ers.

Good luck everyone, and remember...pick a combined score from all 4 games!

I've dispatched a PM to him (I would have emailed him, but he didn't allow emails from here). If he no shows, you win by default. Same goes for everyone else that doesnt post regularly. I restriced it to 50% picks needed, but guess I should have restricted it further.

Final regular season record: 129-115-12, Pct. .527. Best Bets: 29-19-3, Pct. .598.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SATURDAY

N.Y. JETS 27, Indianapolis 13 (+6) - For the Jets it's been a tale of two seasons, with their bye week in mid-October serving as the dividing line between them: 1-4 both straight up and against the spread before, and 8-3 outright and 8-2-1 versus the points thereafter (but for one game, it also coincides with Chad Pennington taking over for Vinny Testaverde as the starting quarterback). Meanwhile, Peyton Manning has something to prove, in that dating back to his senior year at Tennessee, he's 1-3 straight up and 0-4 against the spread in postseason games, despite his team's being favored in three of the games and a one-point underdog in the fourth. True, the Colts are three for three in cold weather this year, but this weekend the stakes are higher, and until he proves otherwise, Manning is not reliable when crunch time rolls around.

GREEN BAY 45, Atlanta 3 (+6 1/2) - Former Vikings head coach Bud Grant once remarked that the Miami Dolphins may not be America's team, but they're the league's team. Well move over, Fish - that title has been taken from you and given to the Green Bay Packers. Making a domed-stadium team play at Green Bay in January with a local kickoff time of 7:30 p.m.? Hey, that's even worse than what they did to the Raiders last year. And guess what? The three-day weather outlook calls for snow to move into the area late Saturday afternoon and continue until Sunday morning! Of course the Packers have never lost a postseason game on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field, with a 13-0 lifetime record and an average victory margin of more than 16 points, while Atlanta is 2-23-1 straight up and 8-18 against the line since 1983 as a visitor in cold weather. Six days after qualifying for the playoffs through the back door, look for the Falcons to get kicked out the door - and in ridiculous, lopsided fashion.

SUNDAY

PITTSBURGH 20, Cleveland 17 (+8) - The further you go in the playoffs, the less attractive underdogs become, so if you like to bet that way, this is the best week to do it. The Steelers swept the Browns this year, but their combined margin of victory in both games wouldn't cover this number; plus the visiting team was 11-4-1 against the spread in Cleveland's 16 regular-season games. In addition, twelve of the 2002 Browns games were decided in the final minute, and Pittsburgh opponents have been scoring an awful lot of points off Tommy Maddox turnovers lately. In all, you've got to like Cleveland's chances of keeping it within the eight points, and the Browns shouldn't be in trouble with the capable Kelly Holcomb subbing for the injured Tim Couch.

N.Y. Giants 41 (+4), SAN FRANCISCO 16 - Not only did the 49ers fall apart in the fourth quarter of Monday night's meaningless exercise in St. Louis, but they also suffered an injury at the one position they couldn't afford one - at cornerback. Jason Webster's left ankle sprain means that rookie Mike Rumph may have to start in this one - and Rumph has been getting persistently torched all year long. Not the situation you want to be in facing the NFL's sixth-ranked passing attack. And even if Webster can play, Mr. Whipple - of Charmin fame - would have had a veritable field day with Jim Mora Jr.'s defense. That's how soft it is! This figures to be a complete, physical beating on both sides of the ball, and speculation is rampant that this would be Steve Mariucci's last game as San Fran's head coach if the 49ers don't advance here. Well cheer up, Steve - it looks like Congress is going to extend unemployment benefits this winter after all!

BEST BET: GREEN BAY
