Default College Football Pick'Em Contest Week Five

Week 5

Friday, September 24:
Bowling Green @ Northern Illinois, 7:00 PM ET

Saturday, September 25:
Boston College at Wake Forest, 12:00 PM ET
N.C. State at Virginia Tech, 12:00 PM ET
Michigan State at Indiana, 12:00 PM ET
Mississippi at Wyoming, 3:00 PM ET
Iowa at Michigan, 3:30 PM ET
Alabama at Arkansas, 3:30 PM ET
Penn State at Wisconsin, 5:45 PM ET
Memphis at UAB, 7:00 PM ET

Oregon State at Arizona State, 10:00 PM ET Total Points Scored

Standings: http://scmb.nathanspencer.com/NCAA2004.html

Administrivia: You’ll notice that many of these games lack marquee names. I decided to take up some portion of a suggestion from KB, and tried to limit the contest to games with close point spreads. We’ll see if Vegas knows anything.

For Everyone: Welcome to another year of SCMB’s College Football Pick ‘em game. Everyone is welcome to give their picks. Simply select the team from the 10 featured games above whom you think will win and list them in your post. For the specified game (the tiebreaker), you must post the total combined score of the game in addition to the winning team. Good luck!

Each week, I will do my level best to get the games for the following week posted no later than Tuesday, 9pm. I’m going to slide on that, I’m sure, at least once. If there’s nothing posted by Wednesday morning, start berating me all over the forum.

Be sure to send requests for next week’s games you’d like to see on the Pick’Em. Note these provisos:
1. PM me only THREE games you’d like to see in the list for the following week, preferably all at once.
2. Requests need to be sent by the end of the day on Monday.
3. I won’t honor all requests, obviously. But, if the same game is requested a number of times, it could unseat the obvious tie-breaker game. My intention right now is to only use one of those requested games in the selected games, but anything could happen.
4. Please, keep your requests in Division I. I will not do pick ‘ems for Division II and Division III. Sorry.
5. For the more obscure requests, give a reason. It could score points. I’m imminently swayable where this is concerned. It’s a game, and it’s for you guys and gal(s), so…

Be sure to try to get your picks in by the time the first game on the list starts. Late entries cannot be honored. If you’re not in the Eastern time zone, adjust your submission times accordingly.

Don’t forget to supply points for the tie-breaker!!

I will attempt, as the first post, to comment on each game, in case you’re wondering how it made the cut.

That’s it!

First game kicks off at 7.00p ET on Friday !! Good luck.

Dave

My comments on the games in the contest.

Bowling Green State @ Northern Illinois: NIU -1 1/2. NIU had a wild shootout last week with Iowa State. Everytime I saw a score, somebody else had a 12 point lead. This game was a bigger deal a year ago.

Boston College @ Wake Forest:WF -1. This is an interesting spread to me. Wake plays a tough style of game, much as BC does. All visual evidence suggests that BC is tougher this year, but Vegas isn't a believer. I am, but it'll be an interesting road trip for the Eagles, who were less than impressive the last time they took to the road at Ball State.

NC State @ Virginia Tech:VT -9. The spread opened much closer, so we know the bettors aren't buying the hooey NCSU is selling. Is anyone? How are you supposed to beat ANYONE turning the ball over five times?

Michigan State @ Indiana:MSU -2 1/2. The Spartans didn't play the worst game against the Irish last week. Indiana allowed 51 points to Kentucky, though.

Mississippi @ Wyoming:Miss -4. The Rebels have struggled. The Cowboys aren't doing so great, either, though.

Iowa @ Michigan:Mich -13. The Hawkeyes were obliterated and humiliated on the road last week. The Wolverines were not sharp in squeaking one out last week. Both have reasons to come out tooth and nail. The Wolverines are home, though, and one has to believe that Michigan will give up on its freshman QB if they need a drive to win late.

Alabama @ Arkansas: Ark -5 1/2. Two interesting notes on this game and its spread. One, Alabama's QB Brodie Croyle is gone for the remainder of the season. Two, despite this, Alabama's underdog status has actually reduced since the line opened Sunday. The SEC West probably won't be decided by this game, but it will be interesting to see how 'Bama deals with the loss of Croyle.

Penn State @ Wisconsin: Wisc -3 1/2. Is Penn State the team that got pretty well run over by Boston College, or the team that whipped Akron and Central Florida? Wisconsin has a strong defense, but no real offense. The Badgers' senior RB Anthony Davis isn't due back until next week. Without him, Wisconsin has found scoring almost impossible. Can Penn State take advantage and score more than 15 points? If they can, they can win.

Memphis @ UAB: Mem -2. The Tigers have one of the best offenses in the nation, but find it incredibly difficult to keep folks out of the end zone themselves. UAB is at home. Has a decent defense. And scoring ability when taking on weaker defenses. Do they have a chance?

Oregon State @ Arizona State: ASU -7 1/2. The Sun Devils have had an impressive non-conference portion of the season, looking much more the part of Pac 10 contender than they did last year, when pundits (yours truly included) picked them to make real hay in the Pac 10. Oregon State has had a tough road to this point. The disappointment in the Bayou, the beating on the Blue Turf. They won last week over New Mexico at home, but are back on the road, where the Sun Devils are scoring 42 points per game.
