Default Yankees Offer Vazquez to Arizona for Johnson

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=1931282

Quote:
There were several rumblings throughout baseball this week that the Yankees want to make a Thanksgiving surprise similar to the one that brought Curt Schilling to the Red Sox over Shonda Schilling's cooking. The deal primarily would involve Javier Vazquez and would be enticing to Randy Johnson because the Yankees would guarantee at least one more year on the Hall of Famer's contract.

But what makes no sense is Arizona taking on Vazquez. Wink, wink - we know the Yankees would take on some of the money, but Vazquez has $25M guaranteed in 2006 and 2007. Now, the Diamondbacks likely will be worse than any of Vazquez's Expos teams, so he'll demand a trade at the end of the '05 season. If he has a good year, Arizona will be embarrassed. If he has a bad year, he will be virtually untradable at that price. Then there's the matter of Diamondbacks owner Jeff Moorad being the agent Vazquez fired.

Since the Yankee farm system is thin near the top, one talent solution is for the Diamondbacks to get Tom Gordon and Kenny Lofton, then spin Gordon off to either the Indians or Cubs, two of the richest organizations in young talent, and Lofton to the Phillies or Giants for a third prospect.
I'm skeptical of trading Vazquez because he is still just entering his prime. I would hate to see it come back to bite the Yankees in the ass if he turned out to be the special pitcher that the Yankees though they got from Montreal. Johnson is the one player I can full heartedly say is worth giving up on Vazquez for. I'm all for this.

Or a bust. He was very prone to the home run all of last season. Perhaps he's another headcase that just can't handle New York.

Don't think Javy will do anything in NY. Let him go

Vazquez could probably do well in NY if the Yankees had a pitching coach capable of cultivating young talent.

Get rid of Javy bring in Randy. This will def help the Yanks. Im sure Javy will have succes else where but I dont think he can perform his best in Ny as he showed this year.

Why is that he pitched better at home than he did on the road last year. He was 9-4 with a 4.13 ERA at Yankee Stadium last year. Sounds to me like he was fairly comfortable pitching in NY. It was the other AL stadiums where he had trouble pitching. Probably due to a lack of familiarity. I still find it laughable that six months ago the NY media was hailing this guy as a Cy Young pitcher and now they want him out of there.

how come all you greedy NY fans need to field an hall of fame team to win? you should look at the problem, manager.

Yes, it's Torre's fault the Yankees didn't have pitching last season.

Torre is the Phil Jackson of baseball. He is a great personnel manager, but mediocre at best when it comes to the actual strategy of the game.

Does team chemistry mean anything to you? I want Beltran and then I don't want to see new faces brought in via trade/free agent until it becomes a need. Keep a consistent line up, that's how the Yankees won 1996-2001. Those teams had a lot of turnover. Take a look:

1996-
C- Girardi
1B- Martinez
2B- Duncan
SS- Jeter
3B- Boggs
LF- Strawberry
CF- Williams
RF- O'Neill
DH- Fielder

1997-
C- Girardi
1B- Martinez
2B- Sojo
SS- Jeter
3B- Hayes
LF- Raines
CF- Williams
RF- O'Neill
DH- Fielder

1998-
C- Girardi
1B- Martinez
2B- Knoblauch
SS- Jeter
3B- Brosius
LF- Curtis
CF- Williams
RF- O'Neill
DH- Strawberry

1999-
C- Posada
1B- Martinez
2B- Knoblauch
SS- Jeter
3B- Brosius
LF- Ledee
CF- Williams
RF- O'Neill
DH- Davis

2000-
C- Posada
1B- Martinez
2B- Knoblauch
SS- Jeter
3B- Brosius
LF- Justice
CF- Williams
RF- O'Neill
DH- Shane Spencer

2001-
C- Posada
1B- Martinez
2B- Soriano
SS- Jeter
3B- Brosius
LF- Knoblauch
CF- Williams
RF- O'Neill
DH- Justice
