Last week: 5-9. Season totals: 27-32-1, Pct. .458. Best Bets: 3-9, Pct. .250.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. JETS 16 (+3), Tampa Bay 10 - I'm so sorry, Uncle Albert, but I haven't done a bloody thing all year! Then again, neither have the Bucs - ever - against the Jets on the road (0-5 lifetime, both ways), Cadillac Williams may be in the shop this week, and Herman Edwards is doing the right thing by going with Vinny Testaverde at quarterback.

BUFFALO 19, Miami 14 (+2 1/2) - If any two-and-a-half-point favorite is at risk of winning and not covering, it's the field-goal-happy Bills; even so, I'll take my chances that the Dolphins won't end their six-game losing streak on artificial turf in this spot and that Buffalo will also scratch out the cover.

New England 20 (+2 1/2), ATLANTA 17 - Two weeks ago the Patriots went into Pittsburgh as underdogs and came out with a win, plus New England has won eight in a row indoors (including two Super Bowls) and Michael Vick can't possibly be fully healthy this week.

DETROIT 16 (+1), Baltimore 3 - I want no part of Anthony Wright on the road facing all that indoor crowd noise - and for their part the Ravens have dropped seven of their last eight in domes. Furthermore, the home team in this series is riding a five-game winning streak straight up.

CLEVELAND 17, Chicago 0 (+2) - Another game that features a quarterback with severe talent and/or experience issues on the road - with the same result likely.

GREEN BAY 31, New Orleans 24 (+3) - The Packers are no value at this number, but they haven't lost at home to New Orleans since 1971 and have a feeling that the Saints will resume feeling sorry for themselves on the road.

HOUSTON 23, Tennessee 17 (+3) - If the Texans don't get their first win of the season here they may never get it - and check the weather reports for Houston this Sunday: If rain is forecast (causing the closure of Reliant Stadium's retractable roof), the Texans would become an even more attractive play as Tennessee is 1-4 straight up and 1-3-1 against the line since 2003 inside NFL domes.

ST. LOUIS 34, Seattle 27 (+2 1/2) - Until proven otherwise, you have to assume that the Rams have Seattle's number, especially at home.

Indianapolis 28, SAN FRANCISCO 17 (+13) - Now that the Colts finally stopped underachieving on offense last week, maybe they'll stop overachieving on defense; and the 49ers should get an emotional boost from Alex Smith's first NFL start and have seven victories and one 1-point loss to the Colts in the last eight meetings - and you have to go all the way back to 1968 to find San Fran's last home loss to them; take it.

Philadelphia 23, DALLAS 14 (+3) - This could be the most important game of the entire season for the Eagles, in that none of the five Super Bowl runners-up who did have losing seasons the following year (out of the last six) were as good as 4-1 after five games (indeed only one was even 3-2 - the '01 Giants); and it doesn't hurt that they have recently dominated the Cowboys, winning nine out of the last ten games against them - and it would be ten out of ten had Andy Reid not opened the 2003 game at Dallas with that disastrous onside kick.

DENVER 17, Washington 13 (+7) - Still far from convinced that the unbeaten Redskins are the real deal, but Shanihan won't run all over their defense so this game should be close.

Carolina 16, ARIZONA 6 (+3) - No Kurt Warner for at least one more week and John Fox's defense should be able to handle Josh McCown.

JACKSONVILLE 20, Cincinnati 14 (+2 1/2) - The 4-0 Bengals an underdog to the 2-2 Jaguars - and a two-and-a-half-point underdog at that? As G. Gordon Liddy used to say on his radio talk show: Oh, ye suckers! And I won't join them, especially with Jacksonville's 8-1 straight-up record in the last nine vs. Cincy.

MONDAY NIGHT

Pittsburgh 31 (+3), SAN DIEGO 21 - Before the season started I said that the Chargers were going to be a flash in the pan, and for now at least, I'll stick by it; and the Steelers have beaten them four in a row by a combined 57 points and Pittsburgh is an impressive 21-11 straight up in the new millennium as a visitor on the grass.

BEST BETS: DETROIT, CLEVELAND, PITTSBURGH

Well guess what? The Dude actually has a chance to win this week - and he will if either the Steelers cover in the Monday night game or it ends in a push; a San Diego cover gives bama4256 his second weekly win of the year and a clear lead in the standings.

Complete results after the Monday night game.
