Checking Up on the Latest Hoops News

The weekend ending is always a sad point for most sports fans, as it means the bulk of the action has already happened, and it is now some days before it all starts up again. Unless you're a fan of basketball, especially in the United States, as it works a little differently, as there are fixtures every few days, so you never need to wait long to get your fix of the action.

In the NBA recently, we have seen the Boston Celtics win 108-90 against the Houston Rockets, the Brooklyn Nets squeeze past the Cleveland Cavaliers 117-112, while the Milwaukee Bucks eased past the Orlando Magic, with the final score 123-92. The midweek action doesn't stop there, as at the time of writing the Indiana Pacers vs. the Los Angeles Lakers, the Minnesota Timberwolves vs. the Miami Heat, and the Oklahoma City Thunder v.s the Utah Jazz are all due to take place in the coming days.

It is not just the NBA where the fixtures take place during the working week, as over in the NCAA basketball there has also been plenty of intriguing matches. One of the recent games of note was between the team currently ranked 10th in the top 25, the Kentucky Wildcats, who took on the Albany Great Danes. The Wildcats were the bookmakers' favorites going into the game, as they had won 3 of their opening 4 fixtures, while the Great Danes had lost all of their matches. It played as the odds predicted, with the Wildcats easing to a 86-61 score.

Fans of college basketball and online sports betting will often take the time to look for NCAAB odds in the run up to these mid-week games. Finding the best online sportsbook is essential for betting on these college teams, as you want to find a betting site that covers all the hundreds of matches that take place each week.

Let's review some of the other recent action from the NCAAB, then look forward to some of the upcoming round of fixtures.

Purdue come out on top in big clash

One of the biggest matchups in the last few days was between the Purdue Boilermakers and the Villanova Wildcats. Both teams sit comfortably within the top 25 rankings, with Purdue currently in 3rd, with the Wildcats in 7th. Given the Boilermakers had started the season stronger (5-0) compared to the Wildcats (3-2) the odds were heavily in favor of Purdue, especially given they were the side playing in front of their home crowd.

The first half was very even, with the Wildcats just ahead by 2 points. However, the Boilermakers were able to dig deep and find some winning spirit, as they dominated the second half, with the final score ending up 80-74. Zach Edley, a center for Purdue, was in particularly good form, scoring 21 points in his 20 minutes on the field, as well as 6 rebounds.

The Boilermakers are tied for first place in the Big Ten conference, as the Iowa Hawkeyes have also started this new season in perfect form, winning all 5 of the games. On the other hand, the Wildcats are struggling near the bottom of the Big East, and will need to turn their fortunes around quickly if they are going to make it through to the postseason, and retain their position in the top 25 rankings.

The Volunteers continue their good form

Another side who are looking strong currently are the Tennessee Volunteers. Other than a loss to the Villanova Wildcats, they have been in good form, beating the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks (90-62) and the East Tennessee State Buccaneers (94-62) with relative ease.

Their most recent match was against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Volunteers were the oddsmakers favorites, even if the Tar Heels' record (3-2) showed they had started the new campaign in fine, if not outstanding fashion. Those who bet on the Volunteers would have been enthused to see them come out on top, ahead both in the 1st half (39-32) and in the 2nd (50-40) to truly demonstrate their dominance.

They take on the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagle's next, which should also see the odds in the Volunteers' favor.

Other intriguing matchups

The biggest fixture on the horizon is undoubtedly between the teams at the top of the rankings, the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the UCLA Bruins. Both are unbeaten, and have brushed aside every team they have come up against. The odds are very close in this one, with no clear favorite. Given how well the Bulldogs have been, not only this year but last season, as well, we think that Gonzaga will come out on top in this one.

Also worth keeping an eye on is the Arizona State Sun Devils vs the Baylor Bears, as the Bears hope to maintain their winning form.
