Tight Race For the NFL MVP Award

Aside from lifting the iconic Vince Lombardi Trophy when their team becomes champions of the Super Bowl, the most prestigious individual honor each season is the National Football League Most Valuable Player award.

Various awards have been presented to the best players in the NFL since 1938, when the Joe F. Carr Trophy was the first to recognize the most valuable player in the professional game. That award was presented until 1946 and subsequently, a number of different media organizations presented their own awards. These days the Associated Press (AP) award is regarded as the official NFL MVP award.

Voted for by a panel of 50 sportswriters at the end of each regular season, typically ahead of the playoffs, the chosen journalists will have already cast their ballots for the 2020 NFL regular season. However, their lips remain sealed and their votes entirely secret, until the winner is announced at the NFL Honors ceremony, which has been held each year since 2012. Traditionally, this awards ceremony is held the day before the Super Bowl.

The Leading 2020 NFL MVP Contenders

While the votes have already been cast by the AP sportswriters, we won't know the outcome of their ballots until February 1, 2020, when the 9th Annual NFL Honors ceremony takes place. During what has been an amazing season of outstanding football, numerous team and individual honors will be presented on the night. Although, it's the AP NFL Most Valuable Player Award that will steal the show as always.

There have been plenty of outstanding individual player performances throughout the campaign. Two iconic veterans, in particular, are amongst the top five contenders this year, rolling back the years and continuing to demonstrate their exceptional evergreen abilities. 43-year-old Tom Brady has been superb with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while 41-year-old Drew Brees has continued to showcase his class and professionalism with the New Orleans Saints.

Nevertheless, according to the latest NFL odds on bet365 for the NFL MVP award, there are three clear favorites in the running to claim this prestigious honor for their 2020 performances. They are Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills at +800, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers at +550, while Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs is priced at +275. No doubt, Mahomes will be aiming to win the coveted award for the second time in three years.

What the NFL Broadcasters Are Saying

Considering the NFL MVP is officially voted for and also decided by AP sportswriters, getting a feel for what the media has been saying might give us a better idea of the leading contenders. In the opinion of Pro Football Talk writers at NBC Sports, the worthiest winner would Aaron Rodgers, highlighting the 37-year-old Packers quarterback as having produced an exceptional campaign.

Meanwhile, the 2020 NFL on FOX Awards has already named their own MVP winner, with Aaron Rogers chosen as the main man. Elsewhere, nine out of nine ESPN writers had Josh Allen in their top five, although Patrick Mahomes received more first-place votes. However, both were beaten to the top spot by Aaron Rogers once again.

Could this be an indication of which way the Associated Press voting will swing with the official NFL MVP Award? Well, until the NFL Honors ceremony reveals the actual winner of the most coveted individual award, we will just have to remain patient.
