Who is the Best in the NBA?

We are just a few short weeks away from the playoffs and so far, this is one of the most competitive NBA seasons in recent memory. The competition is exceptionally strong this year and with the season ending soon, teams know it's do-or-die time. The playoffs are always exciting, as it's not uncommon for underdog teams to get their stride going and come from behind in the brackets to win. Many teams are claiming to be the best in the league, but in the end only one team will be the 2020 champion.

The Eastern conference has clear leaders this year, with the Milwaukee Bucks firmly in first position. In the Western Conference, it's not nearly as easy to pick the best teams as the division is stacked with top contenders. The Lakers are clearly locked in first place, but the next five teams are only removed by a couple wins each. Let's have a look at the teams that have the biggest claim to being best in the league right now.

Milwaukee Bucks
If you refer to the win count as the only metric, the Milwaukee Bucks are the best team in the league right now, but is that truly the case? As the leaders of the Eastern Conference with over 50 wins and and the best overall win percentage, you cannot argue that the Bucks are not a talented team with a hard-hitting offense. Historically, the Western Conference has always been much more competitive than the Eastern, and this trend continues today. This is where the naysayers can claim the Bucks win rate is inflated as the Western Conference faces stiffer competition. We will have to wait until the playoffs begin to see if this team is truly ready to make it to their first championship game since 1974.

L.A. Lakers
The playoff picture in the Western Conference is getting more crowded by the day. Numerous teams like the L.A. Lakers, Denver Nuggets, and the L.A. Clippers are on fire. The Lakers and Clippers rivalry is at an all-time high with loyal fans on each side placing their bets on who will capture the title of best team in California. While the Lakers are holding their first place position firmly, the Nuggets, Clippers, and Rockets are not far behind. However, with an all-star lineup like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Danny Green, and others, this is a tough team to beat this year and one of the clearest contenders for best in the league.

Boston Celtics
With a lineup consisting of some incredible players like Gordon Hayward, Kemba Walker, and Jaylen Brown, it's not surprising that the Celtics have been racking up wins in the Eastern Conference. While their win column might be impressive, are they really one of the best teams in the NBA? So far they have struggled against top defenses like the Houston Rockets recently, but are showing great tenacity overall. It's clear the Celtics are hungry for a championship, but they are going against a hard rival in the Toronto Raptors who have everything they need to be champions again this year.

Toronto Raptors
The Raptors are looking to defend their title of best team in the NBA and so far, they have shown they are the same caliber team they were last year. While trailing behind the first place Bucks in the Eastern Conference, and in constant fights with the Celtics for second place, the Raptors are holding their own and are looking solid leading up to the playoffs. The depth of their roster is incredible, and gives the Raptors a lot of healthy players to rotate in. Players like Kyle Lowry, Pascal Siakam, and Fred VanVleet have been on fire, with no signs of slowing down. As far as anyone is concerned, the Raptors are still the team to beat in the NBA today.

Denver Nuggets
Most analysts would agree that the Denver Nuggets have some issues to work out if they want to be the best in the NBA. The team has struggled defensively this season and desperately need some depth in their second line. If you look at their win percentage, though, you wouldn't know it. The Nuggets are consistently in the top three in the Western Conference, fighting the other top teams for second place. Players like Nikola Jokic have been playing well and drawing praise as one of the best centers in the NBA. Overall, with some adjustments made and some momentum behind them, the Nuggets could breakout in the playoffs and be a championship team.
