The Redskins have the coach, they have the receiver, and now they have the
quarterback. How many more former University of Florida players will the
Redskins pick up under former Gator head coach Steve Spurrier? The answer
to that questions remains to be seen, but the answer to who's already been
picked up is easily answered.
The Redskins have recently signed former Gators wide receiver Chris Doering
and former Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel. Doering has been in the NFL
since 1996 beginning his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He later moved
on to both Indianapolis and Denver. Wuerffel has been all over the league
as a second and third string quarterback only playing in seven NFL games.
In NFL Europe, Wuerffel received MVP honors as he led his team to the NFL
Europe championship.
Now the question remains to be seen how many more former Gator players Spurrier
will sign. Already in the draft is WR Jabar Gaffney, DE Alex Brown, and T
Mike Pearson. Spurrier must not let his Gator tendencies make the best of
him in the NFL. This is professional football now, not college. If Spurrier
tries to use the same game plans he used at Florida he will not succeed as
a coach.
He must realize that he will not be able to have 300+ yards of offense every
single game. He also will not be scoring 40+ points every game, either. I
am worried Spurrier is letting his past coaching experience make the best
of him and he will end up with a losing record because of it.
I, of course, could be wrong. Spurrier might surprise many others and myself
as he reunites Gator alumni and make the all-pro Gators. Do these players
have what it takes for the NFL? Can Spurrier turn around Weurffel's career?
Many questions remain to be seen and only time will tell.
I know many will strongly disagree with me and others will agree, but I am
open to anybody's opinion. Let me know what you think over in the
SC football board. Besides, it's the offseason, what else
do we have to worry about?
