Movie Reviews

Got an opinion on a movie you watched recently? Lay it down here..

I'll kick it off with "Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events", which I just saw tonight. I'll give it a 2/4 star rating.

Carrey's my favorite actor, so I treated my friends and family to the movie, expecting a great time.
The movie gives you kind of that "Harry Potter"esque feel, and the sets are quite elaborate. But unless Carrey's on-screen, the movie kind of drags. However, ironically you get Jim playing three different roles, which is even almost too much Jim for a Jim fan... if you know what I mean. There are enough hilarious moments to make the movie worth watching, but overall I'd say rent it- don't go to the theater for this one.

Collateral

Also just watched Collateral, starring Tom Cruise & Jamie Foxx.
I was expecting a good solid 3/4 star movie, but was instead treated to a 4/4! My definition of a 4 star movie being something that is well done, keeps my short attention span focused sharp the whole way through, and most importantly- has replay value; I would definitely watch it again.

Tom plays the villain in the movie.... first time I've seen him really get into that 'side' of things.. although Interview with a Vampire was close. And of course he knocks it out of the park. I have yet to see Tom in anything less than a 3/4 star movie.
Anyway, the acting is incredible.. the story is very juicy. Tom is SUCH A badass, and it seems more believable than stuff like Mission Impossible, etc. But what ultimately gives it the replay value for me (and therefore the 4 star rating) is the deep philosophical discussions between the cab driver (Foxx) and the hitman (Cruise).

Alexander:

Ok, it is sort of old but not out of the theaters

Saw it the other day.

* * 1/2 stars

3 hours long and I found myself wondering where the end was.

I like history so it wasn't so bad for me but my wife was going nutts and didn't care for it.

Not as much action as I thought it would have and was pretty much told his 30 + years in 3 hours.

Gladiator and Troy it is not

Ray: ****

Lives up to the hype and delivers from start to finish. The acting overall was fabulous. Jamie Foxx was incredible and deserves all the raves he is getting for this movie. If you have seen any older footage of Ray Charles there are scenes in the movie where you almost think it is Ray himself. Sharren Warren (Ray's mother) and Kerry Washington (Ray's wife) are outstanding in supporting roles.

I really liked that it had some teeth to the character study and did not just feed us a bunch of hollywood fluff and dug deep into Ray's demons and character flaws.

interesting how well Jamie Foxx is doing lately, huh? Dare I say a potential candidate for the next "Denzel"?
I've always liked him, but you can see some scary Foxx stuff if you dig up some old episodes of In Living Color ;) (scary Carrey too!)

doublee 12-21-2004 09:11 PM

Yeah, Jamie is definitely the flavor of the month in Hollywood right now. Better cash in while he can. He put in a very underrated performance in Ali as well. Who would have thought he would have ever made this far from his days on In Living Color. It will be interesting to see if he gets the double nod for Oscar nominations.

I watched Van Helsing last night with my wife. I was wondering how many other monsters they could throw in there?

The special effects where good, but looked better due to the darkness of the movie.

*** Now go see it.

if anyone will see it this weekend

I personally cant wait for the new Batman movie. I heard its based roughly on the Batman Year One story written by Frankl MIller, and that Miller had a lot of input on the film.

Took my kids to see the Incredibles recently. Great film that I myself enjoyed.

Shawndo 12-23-2004 02:59 AM

I agree, Mike! Hopefully the 'revisioned' Batman will reverse the trend of sucky Bat sequels... I know I'll be there sometime during opening week for that one.

INCREDIBLES! The last great movie I have seen.... 4/4 stars for this one, most definitely.
With more and more computer-animated pictures coming out lately, it has become obvious that the folks at Pixar are still on top of the heap. You can pretty much take that to the bank.

I recognized the voice of Craig T. Nelson immediately as the lead character (father) in the Incredibles, and was delighted. Craig starred in the sitcom 'Coach' for a long time and I loved that show.
Incredibles is an example of a great story, well-polished and exceptional delivery. The joke-per-minute ratio is good enough so you never get bored, and there is plenty of humor for all ages.
There is kind of a setup for a sequel at the end though, that I'm not too sure about. It would be next to impossible to produce a sequel that would top that one, or even come close.

I want Coach Carter to come out...doesnt it come out in mid-January? anybody seen the previews on it? i think it will be a good movie, but i love sports movies anyways so its just my opinion :)

Just got back from Meet the Fockers. A constant laugh-fest had the whole theater loving it. Great casting, not a boring second. I loved it!
