Soda vs. Pop vs. Coke

How do you refer to the beverage? I call it soda, I guess, but I rarely say soda. I usually specifically refer to the drink I want, i.e. Coke or Vault, etc. They called it pop when I lived in Ohio, and I haven't really experienced this strange phenomenon of calling ALL soda Coke. No THAT is downright silly, IMO. I mean what if you want a Sprite in the south? Then what? I have to say, the liberal elitist coasts have it correct on this one...

In the UK, a soda is often referred to as "Fizzy". I have picked up the term soda here, which looking at the map, would appear the norm for my area.

Growing up on the better side of Pennsylvania, I call it soda. My experience in Michigan has been that most people call it soda until someone calls them on it of the topic gets brought up. At which point, people start talking about pop.

Soda from another better side Pennsylvanian.

Soda from the Long Islander.

Soda from the Bostonian. Funny... I thought only southerners said "pop" And my friend from Texas (in Navy with me) always called it Coke. He'd say "Stevo, I'm getting cokes you want one?" I'd say yeah, he'd say "What kind of coke you want?"

In my county, 50% call it Coke, but I say the drink by name (Coke, Pepsi, etc) wherever I am, whether at home or in a restaurant...

Down in Texas, most of the people i know just ask if you want something to drink, but its about half and half between soda and coke if they say that...

Western Pennsylvanians are infamous when it comes to calling soft drinks pop.

Tarkus 10-28-2006 09:55 PM

It's always been pop...

The people that say different are just foreigners...;)

Brandon 10-29-2006 12:28 PM

Pop. End of discussion. At least in MT it is.

buckeyefan78 10-29-2006 03:31 PM

We go pop here...as the map indicates. Southern California goes soda. That should decide it IMO. Anything those people do...the opposite is normal.

da12ken 10-29-2006 03:44 PM

Yep, it's soda in So Cal.

buckeyefan78 10-29-2006 03:48 PM

What is the "other" on here? The map shows NC as using "other."

Soda, pop, and I guess Coke down South...I don't know any other names for what we are talking about.

Smack, crank, blow, stuff...
