If it is the Cubs, and it could be, I'd say their best advantage is the schedule, not their pitching. All of their starting pitchers, including Prior, have been spotty at times this season and none are at a point where you can absoutely count on them for a win.

All of the pitching is the WC race has been a little sketchy. Schmidt hasn't been dominant recently and Pettite is out. I still see the Cubs making the playoffs.

The only problem with the Giants is that Schmidt and Bonds are carrying the team. The Cubs are shaky. I will be surprised if either the Giants or Cubs win the Wild Card.

Actually BBfan, the Giants aren't relying on just Schmidt and Bonds.

Schmidt is 3-4 since August 1 and has an ERA of 6.26 in the month of September.

Meanwhile, Brett Tomko has gone 5-0 with just six earned runs allowed in 45 innings in his last six starts and he hasn't lost a decision since July. And Noah Lowry is 6-0 on the season and has gone 3-0 with an ERA under 2.00 in his last three starts.

If Schmidt returns to mid-season form for the last two weeks of the season, the Giants won't have to worry about the Wild Card, they'll get in with the NL West crown.

Noon, please get your stats straight. I don't mean to be this way but since August 28th, Schmidt's ERA went from 2. to 3.21. In 1 month, his ERA went up by 0.43.

Since August 28th, his record is 1-3 with a 6.37 ERA.

Before his start in ATL, his ERA was 2.52 and it went up to 2.78. So actually, Schmidt is having a bad stretch and the pitchers on the team are stepping up.

Uh, my stats are straight. I've worded his stats to fit my argument, but nothing I've said is untrue.

That said, I think we're both agreeing on the same thing. Schmidt is having a bad stretch and other pitchers on the team are stepping up

It's interesting no one picked the Padres so far ..... they're only two and a half back in the wildcard and they get to host SF plus Arizona. They could very well catch up and take SF. The real question is can SF and the Cubs win the games they need to?

It's still the Cubs to lose. And unless the Dodgers collapse against SF in their series, the only team I see overtaking them right now is the Astros.

I was hoping the Braves would matchup with the Dodgers in the playoffs in the first round. But it looks more and more like the Cubs or Astros will claim the Wild Card.

Looks like it could be Houston's to lose. They have the easier series this weekend hosting the Rockies while the Cubs host the Braves and the Giants travel to LA.

Yup ..... the Cubs have been abysmal as of late and are basically handing away the wildcard. Good point about Houston really turning it up. And their series is probably the better of the three teams mentioned.

If SD is still in the hunt, they get Arizona, a team worse than Colorado.

I am thinking Houston, they are on a roll and I don't think anyone will knock them out of it as they just swept the Cards!

Mathematically the Pads are still in it, but for them to get into the playoffs the Cubs, Giants, and Astros would probably all have to get swept this weekend and the Pads would have to win the rest of their games. They are 2.5 out with four games to go.

Now 3 teams have a chance to gain a wild card spot into the playoffs, 3 teams have nothing to lose and everything to gain (besides a playoff spot).
