Default Notre Dames Comes Up Lame; Meyer to Florida

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1937879

The Domers are about ready to riot after this, more than 2200 people are currently logged onto the Blue/Gold Illustrated site. This is just embarassing, especially for Notre Dame. To axe their head coach after three years and two bowl games was embarassement enough and now to lose out on the nation's best young coach- and I'm lovin' it. It's comical to watch the once great empire of Notre Dame football crumble like this. It will be interesting to see where they go from here.

Maybe Notre Dame can give George Leary another go.

I have to say... I'm torn by this news.

On one hand, I'm happy to see NotreDame's bubble burst in a most embarrassing way.

On the other, I honestly believe Meyer could win a title at Florida NEXT YEAR. Which will suck.

Oh, and if Meyer could make Alex Smith a potential Heisman invitee... Leak should be the board's early leader for next season.
I'm just sayin'...

I just hope they didn't have a backup plan and this gets to the point where someone is on the phone with Lou Holtz and the question "would you?" is asked rather sheepishly.

Not surprising at all. With his style of offensive football, Notre Dame would be the wrong place completely. He needs to be in a state like Florida where high school kids can fly in the talent-rich state and region.

Nelson has something he would like to say:

"Ha-Ha!!"

Also, Peter King is reporting that Butch Davis tells him that he will not be coaching anywhere next season. He says that Butch suffered a panic attack before last Sunday's game and wants to get his health in order before taking another job.

Good. I hope ND suffers and continues to suck. They are morons for firing Willingham before he had a fair chance. Not only was he a good coach, but a good man who cared about his players and academics.

Notre Dame is in a no win situation here. Their academic standards are ridiculous. Some of the key players under Lou Holtz- Tony Rice, Rocket Ismail, Chris Zordich, etc.- probably wouldn't be at ND today because of those standards. I'm not saying that ND should except any player regardless of their academic standing, but they need to ease up. They want players with Ivy League smarts to be All Americans on the football field. There are only a select few that can fit that requirement. The Irish need to lower the academic standards for athletes down to around the level of a Penn State or a Virginia. Academics are the reason Joe Paterno didn't recruit Dwayne Jarrett, the amazing freshman receiver at USC from Jersey and the same reason that blue chip receiver Fred Rouse from Tallahassee is no longer being recruited. It won't matter who the next head coach because the talent won't be there. It is one thing to exclude a small percentage of recruits because they have such low academic standing, but Notre Dame is cutting off a much larger percentage. Until that changes, ND can enjoy trips to the Insight Bowl and a new head coach every other season.

You are dead on Dave. While Zook isnt much of a head coach, he is one of the best recruiters in the country, and he is leaving Meyer w/a ton of talent.

If Spurrier manages to get a QB, the SEC East will be fun to watch next year.

Smart move by Meyer. I wouldn't want to coach at ND right now. The problem is Notre Dame wants to maintain it's high academic standards and good football program. I don't think it can happen anymore. If they want to get some of the best players, they will probably lower their standard.

Well, Chris Mortensen just said that Fassel claims he does not know where that rumor came from. I doubt Fassel goes back to the college game when there are all sorts of rumors of him at the very least getting an OC if not another head coaching job in the NFL next year.

Meyer insists the deal was mostly done by the time ND got to town.
It would fun to think that he dissed them because they treated Willingham shoddily, but I suspect that the $2M/y 7y deal the Gators dangled before him had more to do with it.
