Cool Anthony's Week 1 Picks

6

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. Jets 20, MIAMI 14 (+3) - The Jets have won 16 of their last 20 over the Dolphins, and while the quarterback who was responsible for much of that domination now wears a Miami jersey, check out who's wearing #4 in a Jet uniform.

NEW ENGLAND 17, Kansas City 10 (+17) - This close call at home over the team to beat for the top draft pick in 2009 will serve as the first sign that the Super Bowl Runner-Up Jinx has lost none of its vicious bite. It will also mark the ninth consecutive time that a Super Bowl loser has non-covered in its opener the following season.

PHILADELPHIA 27, St. Louis 23 (+7) - DeSean Jackson - who will be the first rookie wide receiver to start for the Eagles on opening day in 18 years - will be anxious to send a message to the Rams that they erred in making Donnie Avery and not him the first wideout selected in the '08 draft; but just as millions of Americans know better than to trust the Clintons, I know better than to trust Andy Reid laying this kind of wood in September.

Seattle 20, BUFFALO 7 (+1) - Julius Jones should keep Seattle's running game viable, and even a dinky Matt Hasselbeck is worth ten Trent Edwardses.

PITTSBURGH 34, Houston 10 (+6 1/2) - In the two previous meetings the Steelers outgained the Texans by a laughable 810 total yards to 268 (actually losing the first one when Tommy Maddox accounted for all of Houston's scoring with miscues) and Pittsburgh is a half-point shy of having both won and covered five straight season openers.

ATLANTA 24 (+3), Detroit 14 - When I first saw this line I thought it was time for stronger glasses; but since it turned out not to be an optical illusion, Detroit's incredible drought as a road favorite comes into play: The Lions last so much as won outright in that role on September 29, 1996, with nine losses therein since.

BALTIMORE 17 (P), Cincinnati 13 - To prove who's the worst in the AFC North.

Jacksonville 16, TENNESSEE 10 (+3) - I'm guessing that the Jags will rally around the fallen Richard Collier and Vince Young, a bad enough risk even when he's fully healthy, isn't.

NEW ORLEANS 30, Tampa Bay 23 (+3 1/2) - A similar scenario pertains here: Tampa Bay's 9-5-1 spread record indoors since 2002 looked good enough to take a shot with - until Hurricane Gustav shot at New Orleans and barely missed.

Dallas 24, CLEVELAND 21 (+4) - Don't the Browns generally wear white at home the first part of the season - which would force Dallas to don the dreaded blue in this one?

SAN DIEGO 27, Carolina 13 (+9 1/2) - Hard to see the Panthers putting up much of a fight without Steve Smith - a condition they brought upon themselves when they and not the league suspended Smith for a run-of-the-mill, boys-will-be-boys training-camp altercation.

Arizona 21, SAN FRANCISCO 14 (+3) - Like the Lions, the Cardinals don't have a whole lot of recent experience being road favorites: Go back six whole years, in fact, and you see picket fences - 1-1-1 against the line. But come on - J.T. O'Sullivan? The 49ers are a bad dog, baby - and I don't want them around!

INDIANAPOLIS 38, Chicago 13 (+9 1/2) - Here's hoping that Tony Dungy is telling the truth about Peyton Manning - and get a load of the starts his team has gotten off to the past three seasons: 7-0 straight up and 6-1 against the line last year, 8-0 and 5-2-1 the year before that, and 8-0 and 6-2 the year before that. And even Jim Sorgi could probably cover this thing going head-to-head against Kyle Orton, should it come to that.

MONDAY NIGHT

GREEN BAY 20, Minnesota 10 (+3) - Aaron Rodgers was always an alert beginner at Cal - it was November and (especially) December that got the best of him. Plus he gets a favorable head-to-head quarterback matchup to be kind about it, and the Vikings have averaged a mere 10 points per game in their last four against the Green Bay defense.

Denver 17, OAKLAND 6 (+3) - The Raiders have been the exact mirror image of the Steelers in Week 1 the last five years: 0-5 straight up and 1-4 against the spread, with the lone cover by half a point - because they lost by 3 as 3 1/2-point underdogs at Pittsburgh in the '04 opener. But will the Bay Area get to join the rest of the country in seeing a Monday night doubleheader, or will the "Silver and Blackout" deny them that privilege?

BEST BETS: PITTSBURGH, ATLANTA, INDIANAPOLIS
