Cool Anthony's Week 17 Picks

1

Last week: 6-10. Season totals: 117-114-9, Pct. .506. Best Bets: 21-23-4, Pct. .479.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SATURDAY NIGHT

N.Y. Giants 17, WASHINGTON 13 (+2 1/2) - But I'm not sure how much I'd actually bet on it, and the network executives are in effect betting the ranch on the Redskins, for if the Giants win here the game they moved to prime time on Sunday will almost certainly be rendered meaningless. Even so, not one of the six teams the Giants have lost to in the last seven weeks has a losing record, and their lone win over that span has in fact come over such a team.

SUNDAY

N.Y. JETS 27, Oakland 6 (+13) - This figures to be the last game for a lot of people in their present setting, ranging from the entire Oakland coaching staff to both their top wide receivers - but not for anyone on the Jets, who clinch a playoff spot with a win they should have absolutely no trouble managing.

TAMPA BAY 16, Seattle 14 (+3 1/2) - And for the sixth year in a row and seventh in the last eight, the team that lost in the Super Bowl one season will neglect to post a winning record the next - although that won't keep the Seahawks out of the playoffs because they have the supreme fortune of residing in the weakest division of the vastly weaker conference. Still, the price here is so ridiculous that it's impossible not to take the points.

CINCINNATI 24, Pittsburgh 21 (+6) - The Steelers have won five straight in the City of Satan, so surely they can be trusted to cover a six-point spread there.

TENNESSEE 27, New England 17 (+3) - We all saw a year ago how seriously Bill Belichick takes games like this. Wonder who will get the chance to drop-kick an extra point this time around?

MINNESOTA 20 (+3), St. Louis 16 - Obviously this line is predicated on the Rams needing a win to stay in the playoff hunt, but they'll be eliminated if the Giants do win on Saturday and they've never won at Triple H, their most recent victory in Minnesota coming at Metropolitan Stadium in 1978.

Carolina 13, NEW ORLEANS 6 (+2 1/2) - Jake Delhomme has the most famous thumb in football this side of the "one for the thumb" the Steelers got for winning their fifth Super Bowl championship eleven months ago (Delhomme and his thumb practiced on Wednesday and he could make it back here). The home team's 0-10 against the line in the last ten games in this series, and the home team in this game has nothing to play for.

Cleveland 20 (+4), HOUSTON 7 - Every time in recent memory that a team has snapped a losing streak of seven or more games against a specific opponent, they have fallen flat on their faces the following week; and the Texans are still looking for their first win ever in a season finale, their 0-4 record therein just happening to include a home loss to Cleveland as an 11-point favorite (their largest spread spot in franchise history) two years ago.

DALLAS 35, Detroit 13 (+12 1/2) - With Brady Quinn on the line, it won't even be close.

Jacksonville 17 (+2), KANSAS CITY 16 - Logic says that the Chiefs couldn't possibly lose twice at Arrowhead this December after having gone a full decade without doing it even once, but you simply never know who is going to come to play in this kind of situation.

PHILADELPHIA 26, Atlanta 7 (+7 1/2) - Did they have to rub Atlanta's nose in it by moving this game to the late time slot and thereby shaving a half-dozen degrees off the temperature at kickoff? I hope the Eagles remember to excuse Jeremiah Trotter from the pre-game warm-ups.

INDIANAPOLIS 21, Miami 17 (+9) - The Dolphins have won five in a row at Indiana, and how realistic is it to expect Baltimore to lose to Buffalo at home, which would have to happen in order for the Colts to snag a first-round bye with a win in this one?

BALTIMORE 24, Buffalo 10 (+9) - Well at least J.P. Losman showed something this year. Only a team whose head coach is 5-12 lifetime in the playoffs would appear to stand between the Ravens and their second Super Bowl trip in this decade.

DENVER 31, San Francisco 7 (+10 1/2) - The baby steps in San Francisco continue, but they're 2-7-2 against the line since 1998 as a visitor in cold weather and haven't won in Denver since 1973. The Broncos are playoff bound if they win, even though their life expectancy once they get there has every promise of being brief.

SAN DIEGO 34, Arizona 0 (+13 1/2) - Matt Leinart is out, so Kurt Warner must face Shawne Merriman & Co. And they say that mixed martial arts is brutal?

Green Bay 16 (+2), CHICAGO 13 - And it doesn't matter whether the Packers are still in playoff contention by the time this game kicks off or not. It just wouldn't be right for an NFC team to finish with even a share of the league's best overall record.

BEST BETS: TENNESSEE, CLEVELAND, SAN DIEGO
