NFL gearing up for fall launch of 24/7 network
Quote:
This fall, the league will take another significant step in its evolution when it launches its own television channel, the NFL Network. The channel, like the NFL Sunday Ticket package, will air on DirecTV, but is expected to be on most cable systems within a year or two.

"Our vision is to be as great a network as NFL Films has been in all of its various programming endeavors," NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue says. "That includes continued heavy use of Steve Sabol's talents and his signature-type coverage of the games. Then we're going to supplement that with news analysis and a prime-time lineup that would include all those things that the fans get excited about, especially during the season."

It will be great, as is the College Sports Network, which I hope is coming to my (and everybody's) cable system soon.

Here's one thing I've always wondered about, perhaps someone else can shed some light on this.

ESPN Classic shows legendary MLB, NBA, NHL, college football and college basketball games more or less in their entirety. So why not NFL games? Will the new network be different? I'm sure ESPN Classic would LOVE to show old NFL games in their entirety, so it must be either an NFL or an NFL Films reason or rule that they don't. Any idea what that reason might be?

Err... Is it one of those lame crap where you have to order it for $39.99, or is it free as long as you have DirectTV?

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO_HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

NBATV is part of the extended digital package for Time Warner, so I would think that NFLTV would be the same.

Kevin, I have DirectTV, with the add on sports package, which has the college sports channel as part of its package deal. I really like the college sports channel so far. I watched a few things on there this weekend, plus I get a sunshine sports network that allows me to keep up with my Gators.

I already got a NFL channel on my DirectTV sports deal...it is channel 720, and it takes over after NBA basketball is done. This year it picks up in like July, and it is a 24/7 NFL network during the season. So, this is nothing new, for I have had it for a year now since I ordered so many sports packages. Maybe the network they are talking about is bout to hit cable and so forth. Basically the DirectTV channel I have, has nothing but NFL action, shows old games, current and past interviews, best plays of all time...etc etc... Everyone will probably love this channel. Maybe I have some kind of magical directTV hookup, cause I have already viewed this channel and its contents last season.

Purple, is NBATV any good? I have DirecTV, but never paid for it. Might try it sometime.

If they're really serious about this, they better have a weekly show where "experts" pick who's gonna cover the spreads every week! But something tells me they don't have the guts to do it - the same "booboisie" (as H.L. Mencken called these types 80 years ago) that drummed Rick Neuheisel out of his job would have a real hissy fit if the NFL dared try it.

I think NBATV sucks. I never watch it because I'm not that big into basketball to wanna watch it.

It shows constant highlights and score, ala ESPNews or something and it shows classic games.

I don't know if NFLTV will be the exact same, but it is the closest reference I could think of.

DUBLIN MIKE......here, here! I totally second that. I may even quit my job!

Anthony-- NFLTV won't have anyone picking against spreads. Remember, the NFL is the same organization who refused to air an ad for Las Vegas, City of Sin, during the Super Bowl. Ironic that one of the most bet upon games every year, and the league refuses to acknowledge one of the things that has made the league what it is.

Dave-except tacitly. Pete Rozelle once said, "The weekly NFL-issued injury list ensures the integrity of the league."

Ah, but Kevin. That was Rozelle.

Tags would never deign to recognize that Vegas has assisted hugely in what is arguably the nation's most popular sport.
