Talking Spurrier already trash-talking with Tennessee

It's official: Steve Spurrier has returned to the Southeastern Conference.

South Carolina's first-year coach took a jab Wednesday at SEC East rival Tennessee, Spurrier's favorite target during his 12 years at Florida, while discussing an altercation involving Gamecocks receiver Syvelle Newton, who was accused of punching a student in the face this past weekend before the charge was dropped.

"This was not a full-blown fight. If you want to read about some full-blown fights, read about the Tennessee players, not our guys," said Spurrier, referring to the five Tennessee players who have been charged with assault since January.

Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer was ready with a retort Thursday when reporters in Knoxville asked about Spurrier's remark.

"He needs to take care of his own house and leave mine to me," Fulmer said. "He's got plenty of issues over there I'm sure to deal with. I don't give [a care] one way or the other what anybody says except the people that count."

An amused Spurrier laughed Thursday when told of Fulmer's swipe.

"I like ol' Phil. Phil's all right," Spurrier said. "He's a good guy. We get along fine."

I can only chuckle at this stuff. It makes me glad Spurrier is back. He is a colorful, well-known character who brings a lot of attention to the SEC. And even though he stinks as a pro coach and is notorious for running up the score on opponents, he is a darn good college coach.

I wish the Cocks played in Gainesville this year. I guess I'll just have to be patient.

If I were Spurrier I wait until I had the chance to recruit some actual talent into Columbia before running my mouth and raising the hackles of some of the more talented teams in the SEC.
Can I get an Amen from the bobbleheads?

You know that The Ole Ballcoach couldn't let Fullmer get an upper hand on anything, even player arrests! Going into last weekend the Vols had 11, but Spurrier must have rallied the troops, because the 'Cocks got two in matching nickle-plated braclets last weekend to tie it at 11!

ome October, the Vols should just wear the orange jumpsuits, and the Gamecocks the old school black and white striped chain gang get-ups, and we can have ourselves a real life "The Longest Yard!"

Sheesh. Yeah, good point by Spurrier. The Gamecocks, as FSUViking said, are WELL above repraoch.

I don't see Spurrier doing any better here than Holtz did, or as he did with the 'Skins. Can't say I will mind him eating his words.

I think Spurrier gets South Carolina a 6-5 record and a bowl this season and begins building towards competing head to head with Florida, Georgia and Tennessee in the SEC East. South Carolina is never going to be a program that will compete for the SEC or a MNC year in and year out but I think eventually under Spurrier, the Gamecocks will amass enough talent to win the SEC once or twice.
