Default And the Field Thins Further

Rudy and Mr. Edwards are expected to announce discontinuations of their campaigns, or have done so. Neither received the support they felt they needed to move on.
Quite frankly, its about time. Neither of these guys was a solid candidate. Rudy did not put the time into his campaign that he needed to -- he came off as an elitist here in Iowa. He told a farm couple that he would not accept their offer to let him set up his office in their home because they weren't rich enough. This may not have been reported in the national press, but it got quite a bit of play here at home. His stances on the issues of the day were not well received by the general population.
Edwards message fell on deaf ears this time around. His campaign just didn't get a foot-hold and he ran 3rd or worse in all of the primaries thusfar. In 2004, his populist attitude played pretty well. This time around it was not changed enough to get anyone's attention.
And now we are 4.

Really, for all intents & purposes it is a four candidate race. I predict after Super Tuesday Huckabee will be announcing his withdrawal from the race.

Is there even a third-party candidate worth talking about this year?

I know the Libertarian Party has requested that Ron Paul run as their candidate, which would be interesting but a waste of his time.

At the radio stations we have received a ton of news releases for George Phillies of Massachusetts, who is running as a Libertarian. One of his news releases was from a rally he spoke at for the legalization of marijuana (for which I am all for), so obviously he has no shot at being taken seriously.

I am not sure Nader intends on running this time around. He just recently gave his endorsement to Edwards.

It is amazing how the Republican race has been turned on its ear. Two or three months ago McCain's campaign was dead in the water and it was said to be a matter of when and not if he was going to drop out of the race and by the same token Rudy was the frontrunner by quite a margin.

Thank God the Republicans had enough sense not to vote for Rudy in the early primaries. Just the thought of him being President makes me want to move out of the country.

It looks like the GOP race is McCain's to lose right now.

Edwards will probably be on the list of Veep candidates but there is some speculation that the reason Obama and Clinton have cooled some of the rhetoric the past few days is the realization that they could end up on the Democratic ticket as running mates.

Two minority candidates on the same ticket? I don't see it happening.

Especially if Obama gets the nom over Clinton...

How is Hilary a minority candidate? Don't women make up over 50% of the population?

But she is a woman running for an office that has never had a serious woman candidate vie for the position before. The office has only been held by white males, and she is a female working in a career (if you call politics a career) predominately controlled by elderly white men who, so far, are the only ones to have ever succeeded in winning that particular office. That, in my opinion, makes her a minority candidate.

I see your point but doesn't the makeup of the constituency itself determine what qualifies as a minority candidate? I am sure some of the activist groups would be up in arms if we started referring to Hilary as a minority candidate.

Women didn't even have the right to vote until 1920. They are still discriminated against. Maybe they are not a minority, but they've certainly been treated like one, and still are.

And America is portrayed as the poster child for democracy...

I agree, not that that's something that you can even argue. I've never claimed that the U.S. is a democracy or has ever been one.

Maybe the problem is that people tend to think that the U.S. run by the people, for the people, and all of that.

The U.S. is a federal constitutional republic. Don't forget federal in there. Those are the folks who have the legal right to screw you over first.
