this leaves the door open for people to vote for teams like app state because they are a "good story", not a "good team". which is another huge blow to this stupid, biased system we have.

That's why I'm all for it. The more blurring of I-A and I-AA the harder it may be in the future for a playoff/BCS to exist.

No way does a 1-AA team deserve recognition in the AP poll. I'll admit App St. is probably better then 30-40 1-AA teams but, they in no way are better then the top 25 teams in the nation.

I don't go for all this poll/MNC stuff...as you know.

The questions are though...

1. Could Appy State play in a I-A conference and compete?

2. Could Appy State play in a BCS conference and compete?

Not really a blow for the system at all...it is the ESPN and USA Today polls that factor into the BCS rankings I think.

The AP rankings are independent, that said this is a really stupid knee-jerk reaction to App State beating Michigan.

Wow...good call Jeff.

Yeah, the ESPN/USA Today poll is the one that factors into the BCS. The AP is a different entity and crowns its own champion as do many other outlets. I've found 4 mythical national champions from last year: Boise State, Florida, Ohio State and Southern Cal. Interestingly enough, I have never found another MNC for 2005. Every outlet I've ever seen gave it to Texas.

Having realized that, I still think it's a good thing in the overall fight against the BCS/future playoff as a whole. The AP is a respected entity in the history of college football and the more differences between it and the BCS the less the chances are we will have a more uniform, homogenized system/feel in the world of college football. The less uniformity and homogenization means more freedom of choice for each conference and team which is great for college football.

This whole thing is an utter waste of time simply because the vast majority of voters believe that App State loses that game 8 out of 10 times against Michigan and that if they were a I-A team they are not better than a .500 team.

I think ASU could be a competitive team if they were I-A but in no way do I think they would be an elite team like they are at the I-AA level or even an 8 or 9 win team for that matter.

I don't have a link, but Sunday Morning Quarterback had a beautiful refutation of this story.
