Default Lane Kiffin: Urban Meyer Cheats (And Not Very Well)

Oh boy, Little Lane is wasting no time stirring up things in the SEC.
Quote:
If Lane Kiffin wants to revive Tennessee's rivalry with Florida, stealing two committed players on Signing Day and then publicly accusing the Gators of a recruiting violation is a good way to start.

The Backstory: Pahokee, Florida, wide receiver Nu'Keese Richardson gave a verbal commitment to the Gators last May and had originally planned to enroll at the university for spring semester, but didn't. Then yesterday at his signing press conference, he picked up a Gator hat ... and dropped it on the ground, replacing it with a Tennessee model. He had never shown interest in any other school until last weekend, when he made a last-gasp visit to Knoxville. I guess he changed his mind. (Ok, I can get on board with Signing Day if more stuff like this happens.)

This could get interesting. I personally enjoyed Tennessee sucking in football in recent years, but I am all for a renewed heated rivalry for SEC supremacy with Florida and Tennessee. My question is will Kiffin regret pissing off Meyer and the Gators? They are quite the juggernaut.

mush, sue? I thought the Gator fans would have something to say about what some unhappy Tennessee writers are calling "Lame Kiffin."

Lane Kiffin: Crazy Genius or Just Crazy?

By Dashiell Bennett, 2:30 PM on Mon Feb 9 2009, 11,839 views

Not to get all SEC on you this early in the year, but it looks like Lane Kiffin—if nothing else—is looking to make things interesting down South next fall.

The guy has not coached a single conference game—or head coached any college game for that matter—but he's already managed to tick off at least three league coaches, called one of the them a cheater (erroneously), been accused of cheating by another, and publicly shamed a recruit's grandmother. Not a bad start.

You already know about last week's accusation that Florida coach Urban Meyer "cheated" to try and win a recruit that he eventually lost to Tennessee. Turns out that calling a recruit when he's on another school's campus is totally legit and Kiffin had to apologize. (Not a great way to make friends, but who can keep all those regulations straight anyway?) But that wasn't the only cell phone shenanigans he's been was involved in.

Another report says that when the recruit in question, Nu'Keese Richardson, was attending a Vols basketball game (against Florida, natch) during his visit to Knoxville, he got a text from his high school coach. Kiffin allegedly took the phone and began texting the coach—while pretending to be Richardson—saying that he'd made a decision. (The coach did not learn of Richardson's true decision until signing day.)

He also told fans that the 19 recruits UT added in the 2009 class were "far below the standards we have here" and that Marlon Brown, a top player leaving the state to attend Georgia, wanted to be a Volunteer, but "his grandmother would not let him come." So up yours, Granny.

That should help his ongoing feud with Georgia coach Mark Richt, but Kiffin's more obvious target is Florida. The Vols have won their annual matchup just four times since 1992 and zero times since Meyer took over the Gators, so is all this gamesmanship—Kiffin has already predicted a win in Gainesville this year—simply an effort to rally the troops and put a spark back in the rivalry? Or is Kiffin out of his mind to be tempting the Wrath of Tebow?

Remember, this is a guy who is coming off a spectacular flameout during his one brief head coaching stint and he did voluntarily agree to work for the Raiders, so it is possible that the man is certifiably insane. Of course, that may be just what the doctor ordered for Tennessee. There are some mitigating circumstances, however, that lead me to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I would not bet against this guy just yet.

His wife is hot, though...

Here's the rest of the story...

Florida AD denies cheating, demands apology from Kiffin

Oh, this is getting good.

After Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin publicly accused Florida coach Urban Meyer of a recruiting violation and saying he loved that "Urban had to cheat", the Gators swiftly responded and called for Kiffin to make a public apology to Florida.

From a statement just released by Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley:

"His allegations are inappropriate, out of line and, most importantly, totally false."

Kiffin reprimanded by SEC, apologizes

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin apologized Thursday for remarks he made about Florida coach Urban Meyer, where he alleged the Gators coach violated recruiting rules in pursuing wide receiver prospect Nu'Keese Richardson.

Florida demanded an apology and the SEC publicly reprimanded Kiffin on Thursday.

"At an energetic breakfast with some of our donors and alumni I made a statement that was solely meant to excite the crowd," Kiffin said in a statement.

"If I offended anyone at the University of Florida, including Mr. Foley and Urban Meyer, I sincerely apologize. That was not my intention."

Vols self-report minor violations

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee notified the NCAA it found a Southeastern Conference coach committing recruiting violations -- the Volunteers' own Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin was reprimanded by SEC commissioner Mike Slive on Thursday for falsely accusing Florida's Urban Meyer of a recruiting violation.

In letters to the NCAA and SEC, the Tennessee athletic department said the secondary violations occurred in January.

I had to laugh at this when I heard it the other day. How hypocritical is it that he launches into a tirade about Urban Meyer when he is using gimmickery that is in violation of NCAA rules to recruit players.

Let ye who is without sin cast the first stone....

... and the Kiffin gems keep coming. Reports say he tried to impress recruits by having assistants rip off their shirts, Superman-style. Folks, you can't make this up...

The Bryce Brown recruiting saga has ended, and the top-ranked recruit in 2009 has chosen to play for Tennessee. Say what you want about the sideshow Kiffen has put on so far, but the guy has found a way to land some top talent.

A reporter from Wichita told me Brown is the best product the city has had since Barry Sanders (although he said Brown and D'Angelo Evans are nearly equal). Although, the best talent in Wichita right now is QB Blake Bell, who is on the radar screen of Clemson, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Georgia, UCLA and USC, among others. As a junior, Bell completed 63 percent of his passes throwing for over 3,200 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Yeah, it sounds like Kiffin has been teetering on unethical with some of his alleged recruiting tactics, like allegedly telling a kid he'll end up no where if he goes to South Carolina, and rubbing fellow SEC coaches like Urban Meyer the wrong way. Something tells me Kiffin may be on the wrong end of a blowout as he's rebuilding and other coaches have a bone to pick.

I give him credit he has a lot of flair and passion for what he is doing but something in the back of my mind tells me this is going to end very badly for him at Tennessee.
