Default Possible Ordonez to Cubs?

If Mets wind up with Beltran, Cubs may seek ex-White Sox Ordonez

Jan. 5, 2005

CHICAGO - With the New York Mets apparently ready to outbid any other Carlos Beltran suitors, the Cubs may turn their affection toward former White Sox Magglio Ordonez.

Reports from New York on Tuesday set the Mets' proposal to Beltran - after face-to-face meetings - at $100 million or more, believed to be the top bid for the five-tool center fielder. And that is only their opening offer.

It seems the Mets are serious about making huge improvements. They already outbid-some say overbid-world champion Boston for pitcher Pedro Martinez with $53 million over four years. Now they are aggressively intent on stealing Beltran away from Houston, whose offer is believed to have been in the $90 million range, to the point that their recruiting trip to Puerto Rico even included owner Fred Wilpon.

The Astros, who must re-sign Beltran by Saturday, most likely do not have the resources to get into a checkbook competition with the Mets. The Cubs seem reluctant to offer a player a six-figure contract. And the Yankees appear unwilling to enter the fray, although George Steinbrenner has been known to change his mind rather quickly when he thinks the Mets might upstage him.

The Astros, Yankees and Mets are the only teams known to have met personally with Beltran. Boras told the Associated Press Tuesday night that "we're certainly at the point now where we've gotten offers from all involved clubs," although he declined to name them or set a deadline for a decision.

If the Mets do sign Beltran, it would open the door for another Boras client, the last of the major free agent position players, Ordonez.

Beltran's signing with the Mets would create a sort of Boras Bundle, if you will.

Here's the scenario: The Astros, Cubs and perhaps Tigers and Orioles all need an outfielder if Beltran goes to the Mets. Once Beltran is gone, a market for Ordonez would be created automatically with the teams that lost out on Beltran, thus generating a second bidding war.

Ordonez certainly would be a cheaper alternative to Beltran, although he cannot play center field and cannot steal bases. Several teams have expressed interest in him, pending Boras' release of medical information on his surgically repaired knee and inspection by team physicians.

Assuming he is healthy enough and would sign an incentive-filled contract - and assuming Sammy Sosa cannot be traded once the Mets are out of the picture - Ordonez would be a fit for the Cubs in left field. He wouldn't send the Cubs' payroll skyrocketing and he wouldn't require a seven-year deal. But, if healthy, he could pass or exceed the numbers Moises Alou put up last season - .293 average, 39 homers and 106 RBI.

In 2003, when he played 160 games with the White Sox, Ordonez batted .317 with 29 homers and 99 RBI.

Ordonez told the Tribune a month ago he would like to stay in Chicago and play for the Cubs, meaning the Cubs could win a mini-bidding war. Plus, the Cubs need him because their current options in left field are Todd Hollandsworth and Jason Dubois.

I am not happy to hear this crap at all. What's Maggs have to do? Grow a 3rd knee and blow it out, too?

Magglio Ordonez is, or should I say was, one of the finest run-producers in the AL. Beltran is one of the finest run-producers around as well. If Ordonez's contract has many health clauses, I'd have no problem with signing him to a long-term contract. He can play defense at least as well as anyone the Cubs currently have on their roster.
By the way, Dubois is not a bad option, IMO.

I don't want him. Yes, Dubois isn't a bad option at all. As much crap as Sosa dished out, and received...he still is a good player. He actually had some tremendous catches last year. With that said....we're past the deadline for the Astros. Looks like Beltran will be a Met soon, but I sure would love to have him.

I would too, DWB, but not at his price tag that's being reported. Clutch is great but the #s aren't that impressive for that much cash & length of contract IMO.

I've always been a Maggs fan & I agree with Catman that with the right health clauses, I'd love to see him stay in Chicago...
