Default Next Year's Packers

Whaddaya Packer fans think...

Most of the team is still going to be back. As good as next year?

So far, the changes are:

1) Brett coming back, or not. (Probably will, I'd guess)

2) Bubba Franks gets released. (Time finally ran out on him)

3) Trade Corey Williams to Browns for 2nd round pick.
(Stupid move. They should've just paid him that 20+ mill contract)

4) What they do with the draft.
-Need another O-Lineman.
-Need to draft a better RB than Brandon Jackson.
-Please...NO MORE CRAPPY DB's THAT YOU'LL RELEASE IN 2 YEARS.

5) Free agency. (???) Get aggressive for once.

But, isn't Grant your starter now? Is drafting a backup RB really seen as a priority in the draft? Wynn and Jackson both seem to be servicable backups to me.

Yes as doublee said you are solid at RB with Grant as your starter. You don't need a class backup.

The Williams trade was smart, IMO. They traded away a guy that was pretty much a free agent at their deepest position, for a mid-second round pick? Sounds good to me. Need help at TE and DB, mostly, although they could use another LB also.

Thompson has taken alot of criticism in these parts because of his drafts and free agents, but in my opinion, he has done very well.

I'm hoping like hell that the Packers draft Peyton Hillis out of Arkansas. Listed as a fullback, Peyton can do much more to help that team out. He would be the perfect outlet for Favre. Blocking, catching and running. What a great weapon for Green Bay.
Look into it. I'm being honest with you on this one.

What if they signed Dunn from Altanta?

Would Dunn even be interested in playing in GB though? The Bucs and Cowboys are rumored to be interested and I suspect he would prefer to stay in the south if has the chance to latch on with a playoff caliber team.

He'd be a good fit for the Cowboys. They need somebody to complement Barber, and if Dunn wanted to come play in Dallas, it would be a good fit.

Well not anymore since Favre called it quits this morning. Uhh.... I would hate to him go to Dallas.

Word to the wise in Green Bay...

Load up on the O-Linemen. Aaron Rodgers is going to need it.

By the way...

My pick for Green Bay next year: 3-13.

Aaron Rodgers plays well the first week. Maybe wins.
Week 3, he busts his ankle. Out for the year.

Packers go through a revolving door at QB for the rest
of the year. Craig Nall, Ingle Martin, some veterans
from the waiver wire. Total chaos, no leadership.

With a weaker passing game, Ryan Grant gets his
butt kicked. Defense is on the field too much, they
get worn out.

Back to the '70's for Green Bay.

Rodgers was never injury-prone before, I don't think he's the second coming of Chad Pennington, I just don't. I think the Pack need to draft a young stud CB since our corners are getting old, as well as o-line men.

Mark Belling made an interesting point about the retirement of
great marquee quarterbacks.

Teams that have had a great HOF type quarterback retire have
tended to go into long downward slides, the only real exception
being the 49ers, who had Steve Young ready to go when Joe
Montana retired.

The Dolphins after Marino.
The Bills after Jim Kelly.
The Broncos after Elway.
The Cowboys after Aikman (only in the last year or two are
they recovering).

The Packers after BART STARR (took them 20+ years to get back
to a real contender).

Packer fans better get used to a long LONG dry spell, now.

Mark Belling to his engineer just now "Paul, if Brett Favre now goes
on to another team and is successful, even takes them to the
playoffs or better, you're going to be even sicker than you are now."

None of those teams have had a fourth-year 1st-round pick coming in to replace their HOFer's. I think Rodgers will be closer to Steve Young than Quincy Carter. If I had to compare him to any current QB, it would be Matt Hasselbeck. My guess is 10-6.
