Last week: 8-8. Season totals: 82-70-8, Pct. .538. Best Bets: 19-12-2, Pct. .606.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

N.Y. JETS 27, Buffalo 17 (+3) - Cannot help but be impressed by the way the Jets elegantly sidestepped the twin pitfalls of letdown and looking ahead with their easy win last week at Detroit. Buffalo has won exactly one-third of the time on natural grass since 1995 (13-26), and teams which have lost the first meeting at home to a division rival since 1997 are doing even worse than that in the second meeting on the road (41-94).

N.Y. Giants 24, HOUSTON 10 (+5 1/2) - Donovan McNabb's apparently season-ending injury has made the Giants the clear favorites to win the NFC East and the Texans are on pace to allow the second most sacks ever in a season; look for Michael Strahan to have a huge day.

NEW ENGLAND 35, Minnesota 14 (+7 1/2) - After knocking the Packers from sole possession of the top seeding position in the NFC a letdown on the part of the Vikings is just about compulsory; and Minnesota is a compulsive loser on the road, with 15 consecutive defeats by a combined 242 points (470-228), and only one spread cover in the 15 games (1-12-2). In addition, this is a "Triple Witching Hour" game - a domed-stadium team having to play outdoors, on grass, and in cold weather, all in the same game - and the Vikings are 5-16-2 against the line in that situation since moving indoors from Metropolitan Stadium in 1982.

St. Louis 23, WASHINGTON 20 (+5*) - Paul Tagliabue must have owed Georgia Frontiere a favor! This game was originally slated for a 4:15 start, but has been moved to 1:00, adding several degrees to the kickoff-time temperature - a critical issue because Kurt Warner (who returns here) has never started an NFL game in which the temperature at kickoff was below 43 degrees - and in that game the Rams lost 16-3 at Carolina two years ago, Warner's worst outing ever - and it was also his first start after missing five games with a fracture of the same finger he broke in Week 4 against Dallas.

Atlanta 28, CAROLINA 14 (+3 1/2) - It looks like the Panthers have packed it in and Carolina rookie defensive end Julius Peppers will probably have to begin serving the four-game suspension the league handed him for violating its ban on so-called performance-enhancing supplements this week, meaning that Michael Vick will run utterly wild and the Falcons will continue their recent lucrative ways in outdoor, natural-grass games (6-1-1 versus the points this year and last put together).

MIAMI 20, San Diego 10 (+3) - Both teams have potential looking-ahead issues but the Chargers, who host fellow AFC West co-leader Denver next week, are clearly at greater risk than the Dolphins, who will be at last-place (on tie-breakers) Buffalo. And San Diego has not won in Miami since 1981, going 0-4 there by a collective 58 points (108-50).

PITTSBURGH 38, Cincinnati 13 (+10 1/2*) - Tommy Maddox gave everybody a massive scare last week, but doubt that the Steelers will be frightened at the prospect of hosting a team they have already devoured 34-7 on the road, even with Maddox declared out of this game despite all the medical tests coming out negative.

NEW ORLEANS 17, Cleveland 13 (+6*) - Deuce McAllister is questionable (sprained ankle) and the Saints could be doing some major-league looking ahead to next Sunday night's rematch with AFC South rival Tampa Bay, also at home. So we be takin', mon!

CHICAGO 31, Detroit 10 (+5 1/2) - The Lions are right behind the Vikings when it comes to haplessness on the road: Detroit has lost 13 straight on the NFL highway, and is also 4-18 outright and 7-15 against the line since 1994 as a visitor in cold weather.

Jacksonville 17, DALLAS 6 (+2 1/2) - It is becoming more obvious every week that Chad Hutchinson is not the answer for Dallas at quarterback and the surface switch the Jags are making here is hardly a problem as Jacksonville is 7-2 both straight up and against the spread since 1999 as a visitor on the carpet. All three contenders in the AFC's "NASCAR Division" are in full overdrive now, and it should be a tight and interesting battle the rest of the season.

BALTIMORE 13 (+2), Tennessee 10 - Despite their current five-game winning streak, still not convinced that a deep playoff run is in the offing for the Titans and while they have also won their last five in cold weather, their 1-7-1 spread record as road favorites in the new millennium raises a definite red flag - and so does the fact that Tennessee has lost four in a row to the Ravens, also not covering in any of them. Spot for an upset.

Oakland 21, ARIZONA 17 (+7 1/2) - The Raiders simply had to obtain closure for last January's "tuck rule" loss to the Patriots in the playoffs, but they didn't have to completely shut down New England's offense the way they did, holding them without a touchdown and to less than 200 total yards. It's the stuff that letdowns are made of - and even looking ahead could also be a factor, as all of Oakland's remaining opponents after this one are AFC teams with present records of 5-5 or better. One final note: The underdog is 4-0-1 against the spread in the five previous Raiders-Cardinals games.

TAMPA BAY 23, Green Bay 13 (+3) - Was last week's upset loss at Triple H merely an indoor, artificial-turf thing, or could it be a sign that the Packers have peaked too early? That question will be debated even more hotly after the home team registers its tenth consecutive victory in this series.

Kansas City 21, SEATTLE 10 (+3 1/2) - Priest Holmes figures to gain big yardage against Seattle's league-trailing run defense and the Chiefs hold the NFL's longest active covering streak on the road - eight games.

DENVER 27, Indianapolis 13 (+6*) - Why the Broncos will make the playoffs and the Eagles won't: Depth at the quarterback position. They scarcely missed a beat when Steve Beuerlein had to take over last week in Seattle for Brian Griese (sprained knee); meanwhile, all of the notes the Colts have played in Denver have been sour - they've never won there and have been outscored 125-58 in five games - and have also burned the money the last six times they have played a Triple Witching Hour game. Plus this one's at night. Brrrr!

MONDAY NIGHT

SAN FRANCISCO 35, Philadelphia 0 (+7) - Riddle me this: What's the difference between Koy Detmer and a garbage scow? Answer: A garbage scow hauls garbage; Detmer should be hauled away - as garbage!

BEST BETS: NEW ENGLAND, DENVER, SAN FRANCISCO

*St. Louis at Washington is in a circle because Rams running back Marshall Faulk is questionable, Cincinnati at Pittburgh is in a circle because Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox is out, Cleveland at New Orleans is in a circle because Saints running back Deuce McAllister is questionable, and Indianapolis at Denver is in a circle because Broncos quarterback Brian Griese is questionable.
