Default SCMB NFL Pick'em Contest: Conference Championships

Almost done!

Again, congrats to me, Anthony, poptart, and The J, for advancing.

Everyone will chose who they think will win the game and a combined score for EACH game that will be used as successive tie-breakers. ANYONE is welcome to make selections, but only people in the tourney are allowed to win the championship. But it could be fun to say you did better than the champion.

The matchups this week:

Sunday, Jan. 19
Tampa Bay at Philadelphia, 3 p.m.
Tennessee at Oakland, 6:30 p.m.

Tie-breaker order: Tennessee at Oakland, Tampa Bay at Philadephia.

Good luck everyone, and remember...pick a combined score from both games!

Last week: 2-2. Postseason totals: 5-3, Pct. .625. Best Bets: 1-1, Pct. .500.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team; selections with point spreads in bold.

SUNDAY

PHILADELPHIA 26, Tampa Bay 6 (+3 1/2) - For only the second time ever, a team will play its last game in an old stadium (before moving to a new one) in a conference championship game. That other occasion was in 1970, when the 49ers hosted Dallas at Kezar Stadium in the NFC title game; the following year they would move to Candlestick Park, where they remain today. Where San Francisco lost that day 17-10 as a 10 1/2-point favorite, the Eagles don't figure to suffer the same fate. To start with, Tampa Bay is 3-8 against the line in its last 11 tries as a visitor on the carpet, and neither the Buccaneers nor their present quarterback, Brad Johnson, have ever won a postseason game on the road: Tampa Bay is 0-6 lifetime in such games (1-5 against the spread) and has been outscored 152 to 42 therein; and Johnson is not only 0-3 in road playoff games, but his cumulative passer rating for those three games is 49.4 and he has allowed as many touchdowns (two of his seven interceptions were returned for TDs) as he has generated (one passing, one rushing). Two more streaks round out the lopsided picture: Tampa Bay's offense has gone 13 consecutive quarters without scoring a touchdown at Philadelphia dating back to 1999, and the Eagles have yet to surrender a TD of any kind in a home playoff game under Andy Reid. Finally, warm-weather and domed-stadium teams are 20-65 in postseason history when playing on the road at a northern, outdoor site (the first such game was played in 1950). True, the Bucs did finally win one three weeks ago when the kickoff-time temperature was under 40 degrees - it was 35 in Champaign at the start of Tampa Bay's 15-0 victory over the Bears on December 29 - but the long-range forecast places the mercury in Philly at 3:00 p.m. Sunday several degrees colder, and it won't be Henry Burris the Tampa Bay defenders will see under center this Sunday - and it won't be Brad Johnson the defenders of the AFC champs will see under center next Sunday in San Diego.

OAKLAND 31, Tennessee 14 (+7) - Where trends point out the winner in the NFC, head-to-head matchups serve that purpose in the AFC: They favor the Raiders on both sides of the ball. Oakland's league-leading aerial attack should have little difficulty moving the ball against Tennessee's 25th-ranked pass defense, while the run-oriented Titans offense (11th in rushing, 20th in passing) won't find it anywhere near as easy facing a Raider defense that was third versus the run (and 23rd against the pass) during the regular season. Plus The Bud Adams Franchise has taken it on the chin from the Raiders big time in three previous postseason outings against them, losing 40-7 in 1967, 56-7 in 1969, and 27-7 in 1980. He'll get closer here, but not by much as Oakland sets up a rematch of Super Bowl XV, won by the Raiders 27-10 over the Eagles.

BEST BET: PHILADELPHIA
