Texas Tech expected to fire men's basketball coach Dickey
March 9, 2001

LUBBOCK, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Texas Tech has called a news conference for 5:30 p.m. EST on Friday and is expected to fire basketball coach James Dickey.

Rumors of Dickey's dismissal have run rampant in recent days after it was first reported that the job was going to be taken by former Indiana coach Bob Knight.

The Red Raiders went 9-19 this season and lost to Oklahoma State in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament on Thursday. Dickey is 166-124 in nine years at Texas Tech.
Looks like Knight may have a new job, I knew it wouldn't take him long.

I don't know if we should be taking this with any more than a grain of salt. Texas Tech really doesn't have any tradition or anything spectacular in their basketball program and I don't know if a sure Hall of Fame coach would want to finish out his coaching career in such mediocre form, but, it also gives him the opportunity to build another national powerhouse.

If I were night, I would just relax and enjoy life. Afterall, he has the money.

You say that a lot. People should retire because "they have the money." But, don't you think there is more to it then money? Knight loves to coach, he does it well, so he will continue to do it as long as he loves it and is able. Same with Aikman, he has the money and although he should realize his health is in jeopardy, he loves the game.

It is just my personal opinion that at that stage in Knight's life, he should just take it easy. I wouldn't want to start something new at that stage, but that's me.
