Cool NFL Pointspread Contest: Week 13

Here are the opening lines for Week 13:

Sunday, December 5:

N.Y. JETS 6 1/2 over Houston (1:00 PM EST)
Buffalo 3 over MIAMI
TAMPA BAY 1 over Atlanta
New England 8 over CLEVELAND
DETROIT 4 over Arizona
INDIANAPOLIS 10 over Tennessee
BALTIMORE 6 over Cincinnati
Minnesota 7 over CHICAGO
NEW ORLEANS 2 over Carolina
ST. LOUIS 10 1/2 over San Francisco
OAKLAND 1 1/2 over Kansas City (4:05 PM EST)
SAN DIEGO 3 over Denver
WASHINGTON 2 1/2 over N.Y. Giants (4:15 PM EST)
PHILADELPHIA 6 over Green Bay
Pittsburgh 3 over JACKSONVILLE (8:30 PM EST)

Monday, December 6:

SEATTLE 7 over Dallas (9:00 PM EST)

Home team in CAPS; national TV games in red; other designated tie-breaker games in blue.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget to designate three picks as Best Bets. These are used to break ties between pickers with the same overall record; if no Best Bets are included the picker is placed behind all others with the same overall record.

Deadline for posting picks is kickoff of earliest game listed.

Any unpicked game counts as an automatic loss, even if game ends in push vs. spread. If a poster has left a game unpicked in an original post, the selection on the unpicked game can be added at any time before the kickoff of the earliest game played that week (if I notice that someone has left a game unpicked in an original post, I will attempt to contact the poster by sending a private message; however there is no guarantee that I will catch every single one, especially in the case of picks being posted very late in the week). Under no circumstances can any pick be changed (from one team to the opposing team, or changing a Best Bet from one game to another) once it has been posted.

Pushes count as ties (half a win and half a loss) in determining both overall record and record in applicable tie-breakers.

Last week: 12-4. Season totals: 80-91-5, Pct. .469. Best Bets: 17-18-1, Pct. .486.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team.

SUNDAY

N.Y. JETS 27, Houston 14 (+6 1/2) - It won't be known until very late in the week whether Chad Pennington returns here, but Houston's last two road efforts leave an awfully bad taste and look for the cold-weather angle to be more productive in December than the 6-5 spread record it logged in November.

N.Y. Giants 17 (+2 1/2), WASHINGTON 6 - The schedule doesn't get much easier for Joe Gibbs' offense, as this week they take on the NFC's third-best defense in terms of points allowed (and the Redskins themselves are second) after facting the AFC and NFC leaders, respectively, the last two weeks; and it's always tough going for the Skins whenever they play a division game: They're 2-13 straight up and 3-11-1 against the spread within the NFC East since 2002.

MIAMI 16 (+3), Buffalo 10 - Let the Bills prove they can win on natural grass before you start giving points with them on it; and with a seven-game losing streak on grass they have a lot of proving to do, and will do that proving against this department.

New England 28, CLEVELAND 14 (+8) - Butch Davis has resigned, but since none of his players have followed him out the door I still like the Patriots.

DETROIT 20, Arizona 0 (+4) - When a horse gives up in a race at Aqueduct, Belmont or Saratoga, announcer Tom Durkin will state that the horse "has thrown in the towel." Well if Durkin were "announcing" the NFC playoff race he would state that Dennis Green has thrown in the towel: Seventh-round draft choice John Navarre taking his first NFL snap in a hostile dome and with no decent running backs to hand off to (Emmitt Smith being out two to three weeks and Troy Hambrick for the season)? The Lions are the best bet of the week even without adding Arizona's ten-game artificial-turf losing streak to the debate.

Atlanta 17 (+1), TAMPA BAY 12 - None of the four teams the Bucs have beaten has a record that is better than their own 4-7 and while Michael Pittman has looked good the past two months he has yet to do it against a run defense of Atlanta's caliber (62 yards on 20 carries in the first meeting three weeks ago). True, the Falcons haven't been as dominant as their 9-2 record would suggest, but no way should they be underdogs in this game.

INDIANAPOLIS 45, Tennessee 21 (+10) - The wheels appear to be coming off completely in Tennessee with Steve McNair now publicly contemplating retirement, and the Titans have already lost by 14 to the Colts at home. This one won't be close.

BALTIMORE 34, Cincinnati 13 (+6) - Surely Kyle Boller is at least as good as Kelly Holcomb, who shredded Cincinnati's defense for 413 yards and 48 points, and the Bengals have lost seven straight at Baltimore both ways by a combined 198-74, including getting shut out there three times. The Ravens don't even need Jamal Lewis to win this thing.

Minnesota 21, CHICAGO 6 (+7) - Recent developments in Dallas and Chicago have me feeling a lot of sympathy for Maurice Clarett and Mike Williams - I'd sooner see 20-year-olds playing running back or wide receiver than be subjected to baseball players at quarterback any day (Chad Hutchinson starts for the Bears in here); and we saw one ten-game losing streak in cold weather get halted last week when San Diego won at Kansas City, so this looks like a nice spot for the Vikings to break their ten-game cold-weather drought.

Carolina 23 (+2), NEW ORLEANS 17 - Not only has Jim Haslett been the subject of firing rumors virtually since the season began but Saints owner Tom Benson is now making himself the subject of move-to-L.A. rumors. Doesn't make for much of a home-field advantage, does it? And the Panthers have covered ten of their last 13 on rugs and seven of their last nine in domes; why not?

ST. LOUIS 48, San Francisco 20 (+10 1/2) - At the post-game press conference after his team clinched the NFC East title last Sunday Andy Reid commented that "there are a few other things we're interested in." Well there's one more thing the 49ers are "interested" in: If they lose out they would become the first team ever to go 1-15 with the lone win being in overtime (the other six 1-15 teams all won their game in regulation). And right now I wouldn't bet against it.

OAKLAND 38, Kansas City 17 (+1 1/2) - After stunning Denver in the snow Sunday night, the Raiders should come home and trample the underachieving Chiefs, who could be without both Trent Green and Priest Holmes.

SAN DIEGO 35, Denver 13 (+3) - Sooner or later the sheer passage of time was going to heal the wounds Bobby Beathard so foolishly inflicted upon the Chargers with his calamitous quick-fix policies, and I'm now convinced that healing has finally taken place; and on a weekend when most of the country was dining on turkey, the Raiders feasted on a great big chicken instead. The Broncos have Cream of Wheat where their guts should be!

PHILADELPHIA 33, Green Bay 23 (+6) - Only Baltimore has managed to come out of Lincoln Financial Field this year with a cover, and where the Ravens have a superb defense and had a long history of success in Philadelphia, the Packers have at best a mediocre defense and a long history of futility in Philadelphia, not having won there since 1962. And if you thought it's been a long time since the Eagles lost a game to a team they had beaten in the playoffs the year before, maybe that's because it has been a long time: October 18, 1981 to be exact, when the Vikings beat them 35-23 after having lost to them 31-16 in a 1980 divisional playoff game. Since then Philly is 6-0 straight up and 5-1 against the spread in this situation, including 4-0 and 3-1 under Andy Reid, the lone non-cover a half-pointer at Chicago (actually Champaign) in 2002.

JACKSONVILLE 14 (+3), Pittsburgh 13 - Ever since he talked trash about Philip Rivers and (especially) Eli Manning on the David Letterman Show Ben Roethlisberger's level of play has sunk steadily into the garbarge can; and as they say at the racetrack how a horse "needed a race" after returning from a long layoff, Byron Leftwich "needed a game" last week in Minnesota, and now that he's got one under his belt he'll be ready to lead the Jaguars to an upset that keeps Jacksonville in the AFC playoff hunt.

MONDAY NIGHT

SEATTLE 21, Dallas 17 (+7) - Anyone who would lay a number like this on Seattle right now ought to have their head examined, and the NFC West is 2-8-1 against the line as favorites in out-of-division games this year so taking the points is compulsory even with the Cowboys in a pretty serious mess themselves at present.

BEST BETS: DETROIT, BALTIMORE, ST. LOUIS

Houston at N.Y. Jets is in a circle because Jets quarterback Chad Pennington is questionable, New England at Cleveland is in a circle because Browns quarterback Kelly Holcomb is questionable (and Jeff Garcia remains out), Cincinnati at Baltimore is in a circle because Ravens running back Jamal Lewis is questionable, and Kansas City at Oakland is in a circle because Chiefs running back Priest Holmes is doubtful and quarterback Trent Green is questionable.

The soon as someone re-enters (by making picks), they are automatically restored to the standings, and keep all of the points they had previously earned (indeed, if you look at the top post I've taken care of that already - and you're not the first to have done this; MaddEnemy also returned after making picks in Week 1 and then disappearing for like two months).

And there will be a separate Playoff Pointspread Contest, although it will be independent of the regular-season one; more details in a future thread.

HAHA! And I am ranked 4th, shows you the competition I am up against!

Is smack talk allowed?

How about a warning

After four weeks on the sun deck, Doug Graham dived back into the pool this week - and blew everyone else out of the water: No matter what happens Monday night Doug is assured of winning Week 13, clinching first place over Jeff Boswell when the Eagles kept the infamous Curse of the Haitian Peanut Vendor intact, and did it by more than the six points. Jeff is guaranteed second place though, while third will belong to Nate with either a Seattle cover or a push; if Dallas covers, The Dude completes the trifecta.

Complete records and results after the game.
