BYES: Chicago, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Philadelphia

Home team in CAPS.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget to designate three picks as Best Bets. These are used to break ties between pickers with the same overall record; if no Best Bets are included the picker is placed behind all others who have the same overall record.

Deadline for posting picks is kickoff of earliest game listed.

Any unpicked game counts as an automatic loss, even if game ends in push vs. spread. If a poster leaves a game unpicked in the original post, the pick on that game may be added before the kickoff of the earliest game played that week, but the addition must be made in a separate post and not by editing the original post (if I notice that someone has left a game unpicked, I will attempt to contact the poster by sending a private message; however there is no guarantee that I will catch every single one, especially in the case of picks being posted very late in the week). Under no circumstances can any pick be changed (from one team to the opposing team) once it has been posted.

Pushes count as ties in determining both overall and Best Bet records.

Last week; 3-10-1. Season totals: 23-35-2, Pct. .400. Best Bets: 5-7, Pct. .417.

Home team in capital letters; point spreads (opening line) in parentheses after underdog team.

SUNDAY

DALLAS 20, N.Y. Giants 7 (+3 1/2) - They may have won at Lambeau last week, but the fact that the Giants gained 403 total yards yet scored only 14 points is disturbing, since it's the second time already this season they've topped the 400-yard mark while scoring 17 or less - and they nearly always find the Hole-In-The-Roof disturbing, as they're 3-9-1 against the spread in their last 13 games there. Dallas defense has rebounded nicely from poor showing at Minnesota in the opener and their 10-4-1 spread record coming off a bye is outranked only by Denver's 11-4.

N.Y. JETS 27, Buffalo 10 (+7) - Drew Bledsoe and his offensive line just might be the worst in the entire league at what they do, respectively, at this point in time - and the latter may be even worse than usual this week with two starters (center Trey Teague and tackle Jonas Jennings) possibly sitting out with injuries.

NEW ENGLAND 37, Miami 0 (+13 1/2) - So Bill Belichick insists he doesn't care about breaking the all-time NFL record for longest win streak, which his team would do with a victory here; but he may be interested in using this game to "send a message" to the rest of the NFL that the road to the Vince Lombardi Trophy still definitely goes through Foxboro. So don't worry about the big spread and expect the Patriots to pour it on.

PITTSBURGH 20, Cleveland 17 (+6 1/2) - Maybe all the injuries in Cleveland don't matter a whole lot because there isn't that much of a drop-off in talent from the players who are out to the ones replacing them; and both the home team and the favorite are 0-4-1 against the line in the last five in this series so let's take the points.

ATLANTA 31, Detroit 21 (+7) - It will take more than one road win after 24 consecutive losses to make me comfortable picking the Lions on the road, and since Donovan McNabb lit up their defense for 356 yards two weeks ago (Detroit had a bye last week), look for Michael Vick, whose strengths and weaknesses closely resemble McNabb's, to enjoy similar success.

INDIANAPOLIS 35, Oakland 20 (+9 1/2) - In a Monday night game last November T.O. (had to find some way to bring his name up during his team's bye week) wore a wristband with "The Answer" emblazoned thereon; perhaps someone should have one made up for Kerry Collins marked "The Anchor" - he's been outscored 148-61 in losing his last six starts both ways and Oakland has now lost 11 straight on the road, covering in only two of them. You'll just have to ignore the fact that the Colts haven't beaten the Raiders at home since the 1970 AFC championship game.

NEW ORLEANS 17, Tampa Bay 0 (+3) - There is a time and a place to give Chris Simms his first NFL start - but on the road, against a division rival, and indoors with all the crowd noise that entails, is clearly not that time or that place. If towel-tossing was an Olympic event, Jon Gruden would win the gold medal hands down.

HOUSTON 30 (+3 1/2), Minnesota 23 - David Carr got a haircut on Monday, just like he said he would when the Texans finally won two in a row. Well I guess he'll have to shave his head next Monday because Houston is going to make it three in a row here: The Vikings have lost 17 of their last 18 on grass, and have also dropped seven straight on the road against AFC teams; not only that, but with Onterrio Smith's just-announced four-week marijuana suspension and Michael Bennett still out for at least two more weeks (knee), Minnesota's running game has been transformed into Miami North.

SAN DIEGO 24 (+3), Jacksonville 20 - Axes in the locker room? Assistant trainers slapping players across the face before the game? I'll take the team with the better mental health getting points at home.

DENVER 28, Carolina 14 (+5 1/2) - If it waddles like a flash in the pan and quacks like a flash in the pan, it must be a flash in the pan.

St. Louis 31 (+6 1/2), SEATTLE 24 - Sure the Seahawks gave up only 13 points in their first three games - but who did they face? One mediocre offense (New Orleans) and two very bad ones (Tampa Bay and San Francisco). Plus Seattle is 3-12 straight up and 2-12-1 against the spread following a bye week - both figures being the worst in the NFL. Best bet.

SAN FRANCISCO 21, Arizona 17 (+1 1/2) - The Cardinals have lost 15 consecutive games on the road and haven't won in Frisco since 1978, but it's hard to recommend the 49ers with any real confidence right now. If they lose this, an 0-16 finish is a distinct possibility.

WASHINGTON 10 (+1), Baltimore 3 - 207 yards against Kansas City - blech! And this could be the last we'll see of Jamal Lewis for a while.

MONDAY NIGHT

GREEN BAY 20, Tennessee 13 (+3) - The only known cure for cancer is to cut it out - and Mike Sherman did just that, shipping malcontent cornerback Mike McKenzie to New Orleans Monday. And isn't the salary cap a splendid institution? Under it, a team can be the Tennessee Titans one year, and Mills College the next.

BEST BETS: NEW ORLEANS, HOUSTON, ST. LOUIS

Tennessee at Green Bay is in a circle because Titans quarterback Steve McNair is questionable and Packers quarterback Brett Favre is probable.

Unlike in Week 4, which ended in a tie at the top (between Marc and bama4256), there will be a single winner in Week 5 - and that winner will be abogdan if either Green Bay covers or there is a push, with KevinBeane snagging first place if the Team That Should Be Known As The Nashville Oilers manages to reward their backers.

Complete results will follow the game (wish I could stay and chat some more, but I have to get some sleep as I have been up for 26 hours straight as of the time of this post!).
