Default White Sox

The White Sox currently (as of April 29) have the best record in baseball. Will they keep it up?

The White Sox are a far better team than they have been, but Ozzie Guillen's statements will get him in trouble when they start losing a few games. He is an abrasive guy, in the way Larry Bowa is (they were similar style players) and that plays well when the team is winning, but not as well when they are not.
Again, they are far better than they were.

They will not have the best record in baseball but I think they can definitely win the division.

No, they won't keep it up. It would be nice, but it's not likely.

Yeah, it will be out of two teams, the White Sox, and ...and... and....Twins.

(See how that Coors Light subliminal advertizing has gotten to me).

The Twins were picked by Peter Gammons to win it all, and I trust everything he says.

Seriously though, I think it will be close. I mean, the White Sox can keep this up, but I think pitching is clearly in the Twins favor down the stretch. And, my Royals, maybe they'll play spoiler sometime down the line.

My vote is "definitely not". The only way I see the White Sox contending is if El Duque and Garland and Buerhle continue their three-man race for the Cy Young (not happening). I'm expecting 70-80 wins.

Catman's quote about Guillen's personality possibly becoming a problem once the losses come is a great point, too.

I think Cleveland and Detroit are more likely to contend with the Twins

I still see the Twins winning this division. I wouldn't be surprised if Minny went back on top by June and stayed there for the rest of the season.

The Sox will be fine. AL Central is so weak, they should not only contend but take the divisional crown.

The three guys they need to be worried about are Hernandez, Contreras, and the closer. This looks like Garland's break out year he seems to have command of his pitches this year. Hernandez and Contreras are huge wildcards at the end of the rotation and tend to hit stretches when they cannot get out of the fourth or fifth inning for two or three starts in a row. They also need to find some consistency from the closer spot. Takatsu has been a gas can out there but Hermanson seems to be settling into the role for the time being.

No. Chicago baseball teams don't win!

Given that their division isn't as competitive as the Cubs, but somehow the Twins end up with it. The Twins are like the NE Patriots of baseball (and they'd have a shot if it wasn't moneyball).

But there's also just some bad vibes from the team, especially Guillen...and eventually that stuff catches up.

Franky, how is pitching in favor of the twins when the starters for the white sox have a combined record of 18-3?

I would imagine he's going on the Twins' staff's track record and the fact that Johan Santana may be the best lefty in the game right now (and keep in mind this is coming from a Yankee fan). That being said, I would take a Chicago's staff as a whole over Minnesota's staff as a whole. The Sox don't have a dominating ace as the Twins do with Santana, rather 4-5 solid pitchers. Collectively, Buerhle, Garland, Garcia, Hernandez and Contreras are better than Santana, Radke, Mays, Silva and Lohse.

Agreed, Santana is the defending CY Young winner and arguably the best pitcher in baseball since last year's All Star Break and has established himself as a better second half pitcher the best couple of years. Brad Radke has tons of big game experience going for him and the Twins pen is a lot deeper than the Sox. On the flipside of that Garcia, Hernandez, and Contreras all have reputations of fading the second half of the season and it remains to be seen how Garland is going to finish out the year.

One word: overachieving.

I still don't think that they will KEEP this up (as in the entire season). I think Minnesota has a better offense and overall, their pitching is still better (even if numbers don't attribute to that argument at the present). Can Chicago still win the division? Sure. But I get the feeling that Minnesota will close the gap in the waning months of the season.
