Default Today in NBA playoff history...

May 21, 1986 ...

Houston completes their stunning upset of the defending world champion Lakers by squeaking out a 114-112 victory at The Forum to win the Western Conference Finals 4 games to 1.

May 21, 1982 ...

The Celtics shock the Sixers at The Spectrum in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals 88-75 to even the series and send it to a deciding Game 7. Philly had been up 3-1 on the defending world champions.

May 21, 1984 ...

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals over the Milwaukee Bucks, the Celtics drop game 4 at Milwaukee 122-113 to send the series back to Boston. The Celtics had won the previous 3 contests by an average of nearly 16 points per game. The Celtics fail to close out Sidney Moncrief's crew to provide rest for what looks to be a Laker-Celtic Final as L.A. sits 3 games to 1 over the Suns.

May 21, 1989 ...

The young Chicago Bulls, in the Eastern Finals for the first time in the Jordan era, pull an upset at the Silverdome by sinking the Pistons 94-88 in a grueling defensive battle.

May 21, 1991 ...

The underdog Lakers lose at Memorial Coliseum 109-98 after pulling an upset over the Blazers just 3 days before in the Western Conference Finals. Meanwhile, the Bulls hold the Pistons to under 100 points for the second consecutive game en route to a 105-97 win at old Chicago Stadium to take a 2-0 lead over the two-timing defending champions.

May 21, 1992 ...

The Cavs win their franchise's only road Conference Final game to date by blasting Chicago 107-81. The series sits tied at one game each.

May 21, 2001 ...

The Lakers, in the middle of a 37-1 record over the course of the playoffs and the following season, squeak by the Spurs 88-81 in San Antonio in game 2 of the Western Finals to take a 2-0 lead in their quest for a repeat. The Lakers would win the series 4-0, beating San Antonio by 39 points in game 3 and 29 points in game 4.

I regret the only one I remember is 2001. But good stuff, especially for older fans who have memories of those events.

I'll try to put in more recent games with older ones for you younger guys to relate. Kinda cool to see all the stuff that happened each day this time of year...

May 22, 1983

The Sixers beat the Lakers in Game 1 of the NBA Finals 113-107 at The Spectrum in Philadelphia.

May 22, 1985

Both the Lakers and Celtics wrap up conference championships at home to set the stage for the second of three Magic/Bird Finals matchups. Boston narrowly beats Philadelphia 102-100 while the Lakers dismantle Denver 153-109. Magic Johnson chips in 19 assists in the drubbing of the Nuggets. Johnson would record at least 19 assists in a game 19 times during his playoff career. Both series went five games.

May 22, 1990

The Pistons go up 2-0 on the Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals with a 102-93 win in Detroit.

May 22, 1992

For only the third time in thirteen years, the Lakers fail to make the Western Conference Finals. Meanwhile, the Jazz make their first of five trips to the Western Finals in the 1990s and lose Game 2 of the series to the Blazers 119-102. Portland leads the series 2-0 heading back to Utah.

May 22, 1995

The defending champion Rockets upset the Spurs in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals 94-93 at San Antonio. The Rockets would win the series in six games and eventually the NBA Finals despite winning 47 games in the regular season to the Spurs' league best 62.

May 22, 1997

The Bulls inch closer to a 5th NBA title in 7 years by defeating the Heat 75-68 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Both the Bulls and Jazz (who won 69 and 64 games during the regular season) sit 2-0 over their opponents in the conference finals.

May 22, 1998

The Jazz appear to be heading to their second consecutive Finals by beating the young Lakers (making their 1st of 5 Western Conference Finals appearances in the Shaq-Kobe era) in Game 3 of the Western Finals 109-98 to take a 3-0 lead in the series.

May 22, 2000

The Blazers crush the Lakers 106-77 in Game 2 in Los Angeles of the Western Conference Finals to tie the series at one game each. Interestingly enough, the Blazers would be the only team to beat L.A. more than once at home during the Lakers' 3peat years ( Portland would again beat the Lakers in Game 5 of the series in L.A.)

May 22, 1988

The most memorable contest on this date in NBA playoff history happened at old Boston Garden in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the Celtics and Hawks. Known simply as "The Duel," the game featured Dominique Wilkins and Larry Bird trading baskets for 48 minutes in a battle of wills. Wilkins would win the individual point battle ( 47 to Bird's 42), but Boston would win the thriller 118-116 and set up a date with Detroit in the Eastern Finals. It would be the Celtics' 5th straight appearance in the conference finals and their 8th in 9 years.

Thanks Tarkus. That is part of my hope, for younger fans to be able to connect the present to the past. All these games are fun to look at, regardless if they are old school or new school. Might as well put up a May 23 list now.

May 23, 1982

The Celtics and 76ers wrap up the Eastern Conference Finals in Boston with Dr. J's squad getting the best of Bird's team 120-106. A memorable series no doubt. It marked the third consecutive year the two Eastern Conference titans did battle in the conference finals. I recall this game vividly, being very disappointed the Celtics didn't win on their own floor to set up a Magic/Bird Finals.

May 23, 1984

Boston reclaims dominance in the Eastern Conference by defeating the Bucks in Game 5 of the conference finals 115-108 at old Boston Garden. A common theme for Milwaukee in the 1980s, as Sidney Moncrief, Paul Pressey and Terry Cummings could never get passed Boston and Philly in a quest for an NBA Finals appearance. Meanwhile on this day, the Lakers fail to close out the Suns in the Western Finals losing 126-121 at The Forum. L.A. still sits up 3-2 over Phoenix, but this lack of a killer instinct wold haunt the Lakers in the championship round against Boston.

May 23, 1987

The Lakers squeak by Seattle 122-121 on the road to go up 3-0 in the Western Conference Finals. The Lakers would win Game 4 in a sweep. Meanwhile on this day, the young Detroit Pistons dismantle the defending champion Celtics in Game 3 of the Eastern Finals 122-104 at home in what would become a long and grueling series for Boston before eventually winning the 7th game.

May 23, 1989

The Lakers win Game 2 of the Western Finals over the Suns 101-95 at The Forum. It was the Lakers' 15th straight win, dating back to the regular season.

May 23, 1993

Pat Riley's Knicks beat the two-time defending champion Bulls at Madison Square Garden 98-90 in Game 1 of the Eastern Finals. The Knicks would also win Game 2 before choking away 4 straight to Jordan's club, as the Bulls would go on to win their third title in a row.

May 23, 1995

Shaquille O'Neal and the Magic defeat the Pacers 105-101 in Game 1 of the Eastern Finals. The Pacers would lose three Eastern Conference Game 7s in the 1990s. This series would mark their second Game 7 defeat.

May 23, 1999

The 8th seeded Knicks continue their miracle run in the playoffs with a 90-78 win over Atlanta in Game 3 of the Eastern Semifinals to go up 3-0 on the Hawks.

The 1990 Playoffs were the first I remember watching. I was seven years old, and as is the case with most of my generation, I was obsessed with Michael Jordan. I hated those Pistons teams with Laimbeer, Dumars, Rodman, and Isaiah.

Keep 'em coming, buckeye!

I missed a day, but here is a list for May 25th...

May 25, 1984

The Lakers finally wrap up the Western Conference Championship over the Suns in Phoenix by winning Game 6 of the series 99-97. The Suns, a pesky 6th seed who finished the regular season at 41-41, gave the mighty Lakers a tough time after falling behind in the series 2-0.

May 25, 1987

The Lakers destroy Seattle in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals 133-102 to sweep the Sonics. Considered by many to be one of, if not the greatest team in NBA history, Los Angeles wraps up the Western Conference playoffs with a record of 11-1 (average margin of victory just over 16 points per game) and awaits the winner of the Boston-Detroit series, which sits at 2 games each.

May 25, 1988

The Lakers take Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against Dallas 123-101 at The Forum. L.A. sits 2-0 over Dallas with an average margin of victory being 18.5 points per game for the series. Magic Johnson chips in 19 assists for the Lakers. Just hours earlier, the Pistons manage to upset the Celtics in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Boston Garden 104-96. The Celtics had won 24 of their last 27 home playoff games coming into the contest.

May 25, 1991

An end of an era seems to be the story at The Palace of Auburn Hills as the Bulls defeat the two-time defending NBA Champion Pistons 113-107 in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Chicago now sits 3-0 over Detroit.

May 25, 1992

The upstart Cavs even the Eastern Conference Finals at 2 games each with 99-85 win over the defending NBA Champion Bulls at Richfield Coliseum. The Cavs have won a total of FIVE playoff games since this thrilling win thirteen years ago.

May 25, 1994

Hakeem Olajuwon, MVP of the 1993-94 season, leads the Rockets to a 104-99 win over Utah in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals in Houston. It is the Rocket's fourth straight home win in the playoffs after dropping the first two games to Phoenix in the Conference Semifinals.

May 25, 1995

The Pacers lose Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Orlando 119-114. Indiana is 0-3 in franchise history when playing Game 2 of the Eastern Finals on the road.

May 25, 1996

The Bulls are back. Chicago, with a record of 79-11 at this point combining the regular season with the playoffs, destroy the defending Eastern Conference Champion Magic 86-67 in Florida.

May 25, 2001

The Lakers defeat the Spurs 111-72 in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals and are on the verge of a sweep.

May 25, 2004

The Lakers take control of the Western Conference Finals by beating Minnesota 100-89 at The Staples Center. L.A. leads the series 2-1 over the #1 seed Wolves, led by MVP Kevin Garnett( Make a note of this game, ten years from now it will be the answer to a trivia question: When was the last time the Lakers scored 100 points in a playoff game).

May 26, 1983...

The weary and injured Lakers (Worthy out with a broken leg) drop Game 2 of the NBA Finals to the 76ers at The Spectrum 103-93. Philly now leads the series 2-0. The Lakers set a playoff record by attempting only 3 free throws in Game 2.

May 26, 1986...

Boston wins Game 1 of the NBA Finals over the Rockets at Boston Garden 112-100. The Celtics victory gives them a home record of 48-1 for the season (regular season and playoffs) and counting. Their only defeat for the entire season was a loss to the Blazers at Boston.

May 26, 1987...

"Now there's a steal by Bird...underneath to D.J..."

Words of Boston radio man Johnny Most as Bird steals an inbound pass by Isiah Thomas and passes it underneath the basket to Dennis Johnson for a layup and a Boston victory 108-107. With the win, Boston leads the series 3-2.

May 26, 1988...

The Celtics and Pistons do battle again, but this year looks to be the changing of the guard in the East. Boston wins on this date 119-115 at Boston Garden to tie the Eastern Finals at a game each. The double overtime thriller keeps Boston alive...for now.

May 26, 1991...

The Lakers, seeking their first Western Conference Title without Kareem under Magic Johnson, take a big step forward by beating Portland 116-95 at The Forum. L.A. sits 3-1 over the Blazers.

May 26, 1992...

The Blazers get a big overtime win at home in Game 5 of the Western Finals over Utah 127-121 to take a 3-2 lead in the series.

May 26, 1994...

The Knicks beat up (literally) Indiana 89-78 in Game 2 of the Eastern Finals at Madison Square Garden to take a 2-0 lead in the series. The win is New York's 8th straight victory at home in the playoffs.

May 26, 1996...

Seattle upsets Utah 88-86 in Game 4 of the Western Finals to put the Sonics up 3-1 in the series. The loss for Utah was only their 4th defeat in the last 48 games at home.

May 26, 2002...

Horry does it again.

Trailing 99-97, Kobe Bryant drives the lane, puts up a clanker, Shaq fails to put it back, Divac slaps the ball out, Horry grabs it, shoots...GAME OVER. The Lakers win Game 4 of the Western Finals at Staples Center with a 100-99 win over Sacramento. The series is now tied at 2 games each.

May 26, 1990...

Michael Jordan drops 47 points on the Pistons in Game 3 of the Eastern Finals in a 107-102 Chicago win. Detroit leads the series 2-1.

May 26, 1977

Old School-

Philadelphia destroys Portland 107-89 at The Spectrum in Game 2 of the NBA Finals to go up 2-0 on the Cinderella Blazers. The Blazers continue to struggle on the road in the playoffs, with their record falling to 3-5 away from Memorial Coliseum.
